i was on mods.dk and i saw a "mod" for a scanner that i have. this mod says it allows you to "tap the demodulated/discriminator output". what is this for and is it of any use to the average listener, or is this for servicing the unit? any help is appreciated.

With this mod and the proper software you can decode medical telemetry from ambulances, digital (non voice)Pagers,ACARS,MDT's PL & DTMF tones and other digital modes used on VHF/UHF.

Basically this will allow you to use all of the modulation information on that frequency. Most scanners only use the audio spectrum to play the voice signals for you and filter out everything else. The best place to access all of the data available is at the descriminator output before it is processed in any fashion. This is where you would connect an interface to decode that information.

EVERYONE keep in mind if its scrambled or requires some form of decoding and is not HAM or CB the following rule applyes ...

Section 605 FCC rules states ......

No person not being authorized by the sender shall intercept any radio communication and divulge or publish the existence, contents, substance, purport, effect, or meaning of such intercepted communication to any person. No person not being entitled thereto shall receive or assist in receiving any interstate or foreign communication by radio and use such communication (or any information therein contained) for his own benefit or for the benefit of another not entitled thereto. No person having received any intercepted radio communication or having become acquainted with the contents, substance, purport, effect, or meaning of such communication (or any part thereof) knowing that such communication was intercepted, shall divulge or publish the existence, contents, substance, purport, effect, or meaning of such communication (or any part thereof) or use such communication (or any information therein contained) for his own benefit or for the benefit of another not entitled thereto.

Now some require a KEY which is a form on pass word like our scrambled radios here at the Sheriff office. In short be aware of what you are lissing too it could get you into BIG trouble.

2ec837 and racer x, thanks for the responses. i dont think i'll be doing this mod, as i dont have the appropriate interfaces and am not that into scanning these days. i just like to learn. (which, by the way, was the purpose of my post.)

bruce, i do not understand why you feel the need to interject with the rules and regulations regarding a particular mod or practice. i have read numerous posts where you hijack a thread to remind everyone of the potential legal reprocussions of their actions. this is not an FCC sponsored site, nor is it a legal discussion forum. as a matter of fact, there is a specific place on this forum for legal discussion. im sure you are very familiar with it. in the future, i'm sure we would all appreciate it if you kept your legal jargon to yourself unless asked specifically. your reply to my post is a complete waste of bandwidth.

I don't think Bruce is out of line here. He's just cautioning you about the ramifications of doing the mod you asked about. You asked for information about the mod and he gave it to you. It wasn't technical information, but good information nonetheless.
