I don't know if comparing it to a Beetle is a good thing Bruce - everyone I've known that had one had trouble getting them started in wet weather! |

Sorry to hear you got the only bad one ever made. My last one (1973 ) went almost 300,000 miles between 3 owners ...... like a timex. It was not the ONLY good car ..... My camery was at 200,000 when i gave it to a needy family they are still driving it ( 225,000 and still going ) 76 AMC HORNET = 150,000 sold it to my friends kid it went close to 200,000..... best $400 he ever spent. 79 Pontac went 175,000 untill we got hit head on. ( by a cop ) AND THEN THERE WAS ......... My infamous.... 88 pontac 6000 (LOL) 100,000 blew the motor in the DRIVEWAY! NOTE DONT BUY ONE! |

I always wanted a VW Beetle, but they don't come with A/C and I can't live without it. My brother had one and several friends too. They all had an issue with wet weather. I think it was a distributor cap problem. One said that taking the cap off and spraying it with WD-40 fixed it temporarily, but he had the problem repeatedly. I've killed two Ford Escorts ('85 and '87)- they apparently know when they hit 100,000 miles and intentionally warp their heads soon thereafter. My 83 Quantam Turbodiesel was still running strong when I traded it in on my 2000 Golf TDI. I should have kept it becuase it was the single best car I've ever seen for radio. Quiet, and it came with a charging system second to no other car I ever saw. |

Wow - was it a VW product? I had seen aftermarket air conditioners in catalogs and magazine ads for VW Bugs, but when I was in the market for my first car back in the mid 80's they were nowhere to be found. I figured with the big deal about R-12 they stopped making them. I saw a TV program where the VW Bug is still made in Mexico and they have A/C from the factory. They can be imported, but they have to be imported as a rolling chassis and a crated engine, then be assembled and registered as a kit car to get around the emissions laws that they can't pass. I've considered doing that but even though they're made in Mexico they aren't cheap. I've also thought about buying a classic and restoring it, but I didn't think I could get the A/C kit anymore so I never persued it. |

Rob the 6000 (88) was at best junk..... it could be your 83 was better year for that car but the 87-89 6000 record of repair speaks for it's self. |

I know what you mean Bruce! I think mine was a fluke because I remember hearing alot bad things about the 6000.As far as the Beattle with A/C goes it worked on flat ground but if you had two people in the car and tried to pull a hill of any length you had to shut it off because it robbed all your power and would make the motor overheat. |

What kind of mileage did the Bug get? My TDI gets about 40MPG with the A/C on high. I like to joke with my brother that my TDI gets better mileage than his Wide Glide, and I have A/C! I wish I could buy the smaller VW model that has a 3 CYL TDI and gets over 75MPG, but it's too small and the DOT won't allow it here because it would be easily crushed by the average SUV. |

is this thread about a bug car or a 718? Seems that this thread has been taken over by someone elses topic. Do we have a bug car review area?

Racer X do a Google search on "VW Trends" and it will give you a start on what can be done to a Beatle with modern technoligy, with after market parts the air cooled beatle can be as powerful and dependable as anything on the road. |

718 is a great little radio. Easy to use and it has great ssb audio. Mine has no mods. I am a ham. No need to use it anywhere else. CW is great even without filters. DSP is good too. Notch filter works great. For the money quality is up there with the more expensive rigs. |

I put the 450hz Inrad cw filter in mine. With that installed it's a pretty decent little rig. Menu items are pretty much straight forward. Rig is small and works out well for travel, portable/field use. Display is large enough for adult eyes. |

I have had my 718 for twelve months now. Good Solid rig and you don't have to be a rocket scientist to operate it. No FM is a bit of a bummer but I still have the Kenwood and Ranger and only work eleven meters anyway. Murray |

The 718 is icoms answer to the FT-840 and a good one. They sound good on the air and like the 840 few need repairs ...... FM is useless on HF even though I'm a FM-aholic and use 29.600 for most hams it is just not worth the trouble. If you want a good 10 meter fm rig go find a alinco rig the DR M03 alinico is a great fm rig even though its only 10 watts. |

I have the IC-718 as a back up rig in the shack. It is modded but for use on the 5 channels on 60 meters. After the mod it will transmit anywhere it receives. It will receive 11 meters. I have used it to talk with a couple of guys using AM on 75 meters and it dead keys at 40 watts and swings to 100. I have good reports using it on all modes. It is a great CW rig! Bruce is right, no FM. Do people on CB use that much FM? Marty |

I've owned a 718 for 3 years, great radio and a great value in ham radio. It's back in it's box now, too many other radios and I just love my old Kenwood TS-520S, that's my main rig. Never use AM on HF and I don't miss FM at all. Used price of about $400.00, with DSP, you can not do any better. cheers, sb106. |
