hey, bruce, or anybody...
was just given a d104 with a "G" stand, has only 2 wires, red & white, & shield. was wired w/phono plug to a collins...will it work on anything 4-5-6-8 pin with or without mods, internal or external? it's in excellent shape, & 'take it away' is hard to pass up! |

Pat00,the unamplified d-104 is a hi-z mic designed for tube rigs.it will work audio-wise with solid state radios at a reduced audio level.while it would be a good canadate to use with a speech processor it may not have enough switching to operate a more modern rig.Incidently,Astatic use to offer an aftermarket kit to convert that mic into a d-104/tug-8 amplified mic with 4 wire switching. |

Patzerozero - you can use it with any radio that is relay switched, or a diode switched radio that can receive with the microphone unplugged.
There were switch kits sold to convert old mics so that they can be used with diode switching where the receive pin needed to be shorted in order to enable receive audio - I have a few for Turners, but none for Astatics.
Something else to think about - this microphone is high impedance (50,000 ohm) and might not sound very good on a modern radio engineered to work with a low impedance microphone. The impedance mismatch rolls off the low end frequencies and makes it sound even more high cut than amplified D104's do. |

that should have a SPST PTT common ground ( sheild ) and a mike hot. it will not work with electronic switching if your PTT cuts out the speaker. |

Patzerozero - there is a fairly easy amplifier that you can make with an FET to add a bit of output which isn't really needed, but it also matches the impedance so it'll work much better on a radio with a low impedance microphone input.

Another other thought about adding an amplifier/impedance matcher to the D104...
The Lou Franklin speech processor can be configured to work with both low Z and hi Z microphones and radios. The output can be adjusted to whatever level you need, there is plenty of room for it and a 9V battery in the base of the microphone or you could build it in a separate box, it's inexpensive, most of the parts you'll need are included, it's easy to build, and as an added bonus you can turn up the clipping if you want it to really scream. |

thanks, racer. i've got a couple built lou franklin processors laying around, may still even have an unbuilt left, used to put 'em on EVERYTHING 20 years ago. mic removal cuts speaker on XL, but not S9, delta force, ar3500, or ic735. can't get to 101e....
now if i can just get a minute of spare time |
