I have been looking to add a new radio to my collection, and have been thinking of the Galaxy or the Ranger. However after all the positive post on the Magnum S9 I added it to the list. I want a radio that has loud and clear audio on AM as well as SSB. The radio will be install in my truck, so simple operation is also at the top of my list. I quess I am looking for any input on these 3 radios,(reliablity, features, etc..) or if there is another radio I should be considering. Also what microphone would be best? Any and all input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

my preference would be the S9, most likely...maybe...probably...possibly...yeah- had a 6900ftb, receive was 148/XL like, in other words, pretty good. have never been a fan of ANY galaxy radios' receiver, the 95T included, lots more 'noise' then signal, the S9, which has been going back & forth in my truck & base has an exceptional rcvr-MY OPINION is it's better then the 148/XL. i got rid of the 6900 (mainly because the $ offered was too good to pass up)because it just didn't "feel right". the audio was so-so, i actually believe the 95T i used was LOUDER then the 6900 i owned, but the 6900 just never sounded right no matter what mic was on it or what was done to the audio. same with the amp section, it didn't work like the 2970's, & i definitely am not enamored of them! i've NEVER owned a galaxy i couldn't break, so as much as i wouldn't mind adding a 95T to the lineup, i don't think i ever would. i do use SSB a bit, and the S9 is a pretty fair performer-stock, & it is loud and clear as well on AM. i use AM A LOT, and have been experimenting amp uses with it on AM, and have yet to find the amp that works right with the S9. and from what i've seen so far, what i can use on SSB is far from optimum on AM and the opposite is even more true. what works great on AM is horrid sounding on SSB. i'm not talking about 100-150 watts like the 6900/95T either, more like 4-8 transistors. in your case 100-150 may be enough & the 6900/95T may be OK, therefore the S9 might not cut it. but maybe 200 AM & 400+ SSB is what you're after, then the S9 MAY work with the right setup. that said, i'm still using my grant XL with 2 pill or 5 pill in my truck...if that input didn't confuse you-hats off to you! |

I like the idea of the 150-180 watts with the Ranger and the Galaxy, but the reviews of the S9 sound great. Thanks
