I was reading some old postings on the 96 inch Francis whip. A member mentioned that these 8 footers had a helix coil or was helix wound. Different than all other mobile elements.Are these antennas built like base omni atennas? Also can someone explain what is meant by a helix design? I thought a FG whip was just a small wire or copper strip stung through a rod.
Also can I get some reviews on this antenna? Dont believe much more has been posted about it. Thanks for everyones friendliness. It is education that I seek! |

Hotwire, I remember all that hype going around in those days. I think it was all promotion. There certainly is wire inside the fiberglass, but I doubt it is a helix wound wire. Best that I can recall is that they worked very good and did not lay down as much as a SS whips that were popular back then.
I cut one back a little one time and there were three wires inside, but they were not helix wound. If I had gone further down on the antenna, maybe I would have seen some twisting, but I doubt it would be very much. IMO, doing that during production would increase the cost quite a bit and I recall they were cheap. 5/8 wave 3/4 wave 7/8 wave. I don't believe it. |

You know what Marconi? You have a point there! A very strong one. An antenna like that would be harder to manufacture and lets not even talk about price. 30 dollar antenna but it is really nice anyway. Thank you sir
