Kirk, I have had mine since Jan of this year and really like it. Have gotten real good reports on it also. It was a little tricky programming for a layman like me at first. It does have the detachable face place and you can get(I heard) a 6 wire phone cord at the shack or Walmart and operate it remote. Run mine on base and my Astron 20 power supply handles it nicely.

Kirk,

I have had one since I first got my ticket ... I sold it off to get a Kenwood with all the bells and whistles - only to sell the Kenwood and get another FT-7800!

Do yourself a favor though - if you plan on programming a lot of stuff into it - get the software!

Good lil radio. I used the software to program it. I got every repeater, both 2 mtr and 440, within 100 miles plus every police freq. my scanners have ever picked up, throw in State PDs and township utilities and a few school bus freqs (my kids' buses) and I'm at about 40% full.

Theres a ham radio board (not sure if I would be allowed to post it here) that primairaly is for reviews of ham equip by other hams.

would be easy enough to find if you did a google or yahoo search typing in ft-7800r review. has about the best reviews on there for a dual bander.

have heard a couple of them here locally and they sounded pretty good. would like to be able to afford one myself.

Using a VX-170 HT. another radio I heard locally that sounded good and had high marks on the review site.
