Just picked up a Cobra 148FGTL DX+. This radio was made in Taiwan. My 148 NWST was made in China. The export Codra sure is more powerful than the China made Cobra. My Question is...... When did Cobra go wrong? I always thought my china cobra was great until I investigated this Taiwan made set. I know alot of people dislike Cobra now because of low standards of qaulity control but I think Taiwan is a little more picky. When did Cobra stop production of the export? I will say that my 148 NWST had to have a 33 componet rebuid and it is as good as almost any.Does anybody use a 148fgtl dx+? How do you like it? |

Hotwire, I also bought a brand new chinese Cobra 148nwst and it was nothing but trouble from day one. I eventually found a good tech in Australia who sorted it out for me and it was a good performer after that. You should not have to go through this with a new radio. Main problem was it would drift off frequency by as much as 300hz. I eventually replaced it with a second hand Uniden Grant and that is a rock solid radio. To any new users I would reccommend the Texas Ranger 296 which is about as close to the old Uniden Cobra's that you can get although I have a feeling that these may have been discontinued. |

Glad I'm not the only one that didn't keep the China made Cobra 148-GTL-ST, kinda looks like since Cobra went to having their radios made in China they shoot their self in the foot. Now to get a good Cobra 148-GTL you have to go all the way back to those made prior to 1994, although the Uniden Grant XL-LT and some of the Texas Ranger radios are very close to being the same, The Cobra 148F-GTL was also the same radio as the late great original 148-GTL. Since I've taken a great liking to my Uniden Grant XL, very stable on frequency radio. |

It's the other way around. Cobra went away from Uniden to have their radios made in China to have a smaller manufacturing cost, not caring what the public thought about their bad business move. And worse yet Uniden is no longer of Phillipine manufacture. Now the big picture is how long can we keep those great Phillipine made radios operating? I'm well on my way of building up a back stock of pre business war Uniden sideband radios. Might even look into getting a Grant LT and maybe one or two good Cobra 2000-GTLs to put away. Already have several of the great made in Japan, Uniden uPD-858 PLL sideband radios of the 70s and 80s. |

Well yea, Yankee. I didnt mean Uniden kicked them to the curb. Cobra quit Uniden. The Unidens are still smoking radios when tuned right |
