I have a brand new Uniden Grant LT on the way(used for a base). What base mic sounds best with this radio? I really regret selling my D104 Silver eagle... |

The real question is what mic sounds best with your voice. ANY low impedance microphone will sound good on the radio, but your voice sounds different from microphone to microphone. |

I run a Grant XL base and I've had very good reports with Turner plus 3 and Turner Super Sidekick, now the Silver Eagle depends on each person's voice, I also have a Silver Eagle that I use when running DX, plus at times I use the 10-DA head on the Silver Eagle also with good reports, at rare times I'll also run a TUG-8 D104. All the microphones I have named here work very well when running the Uniden Grants as a base radio. Yes, I understand that's a large investment just in microphones just to be sure you have the right set up, but I didn't purchase them all at the same time. The whole idea of having several different types of microphones is so the people you talk to the most can pick the one that sounds the best to them. A lot of the time the Turner Plus 3 is the microphone of choice as it is a speach compression microphone. |

If you can at all afford to keep the Silver Eagle, by all means hang on to it as the value keeps going up on the Silver Eagles. |

Yankee, thats the thing i sold my silver eagle about a year ago. I bought it about 7 years ago, and i had only used it for about 6 months when i first got it, then it was put away. It was mint...NOW i regret it, seeing how hard it is to get a mint d104 and expensive...i didnt think i'd be setting up a base again. I might try a turner +3. Thanks. |

Yes Jim, I understand but the DM-452 in an echo microphone. They just don't sound good on sideband, also it's a hand microphone and the only place I use a hand microphone is mobile, but still don't like a hand microphone, if I have to use a hand microphone I like the tear drop microphone design and the DM-452 just doesn't feel right in my old hand. Yes, old I'm 67. And the people who do run them on sideband have them all but shut off on the echo control. Just my own opinion about echo on sideband. |

From what i've been reading i'm going to order a DM-452. Can't go wrong for the price. Also, can someone tell me if the Grant LT has a 4 pin or a 5 pin microphone? Still waiting for my grant to arrive, havn't recieved it yet. |

I have really good luck using the stock microphone with a Heil HC-5 element installed in place of the stock one. Sounds good on SSB, and sounds good on AM... The DM-452 will probably do great, too. Have fun with the Grant! |

The DM-452 does sound good on SSB./ If correctly set./ I have a Silver Salute desk mic which i switch back and forth with on my base. I don't mind using a hand-mic on my base. JIM/ PA/ CEF 352 |

I hope so Kilowatt. I've been reading the forums and its amazing how so many of you guys end up talking to each other during DX. I used to shoot for DX up in sideband, never really tried for any AM contacts. that was about 8 years ago. I'll have to try that out. I was running a Ranger 2950/D104 an A99 and a small palomar elite 100, I had no problem talking to anyone i could hear out there. Living up on the hill here, which is the highest point around this area gave me an advantage. Made those super mobiles upset i was talking over them, lol. What state are you in? |

I'm in Florence, Mississippi, which is about 11 miles outside of the capitol of Jackson. My station is on a fairly good hill, and I get out pretty good when the conditions allow it... Since you are on the highest hill in your area, you are indeed fortunate! Which state are you in? If you are within 400-500 miles, we might be able to utilize the "troposcatter" effect at night if you have a beam. It'd probably have to be on SSB, though, as AM doesn't tend to do very well for troposcatter. Have a great wekend, and enjoy that Grant! |

I'm located in Boston, Massachusetts. I dont have a beam, but i can only imagine how well it would work, considering where i'm located. I have done "troposcatter" didnt know that's what it was called. I had talked to conneticuit one night, i could hear the guy loud and clear and the other people i was talking to couldnt hear him at all. And they were all locals. He was coming in strong too...they all told me i was talking to myself, lol. There were certain stations i could talk to all the time that were about 50-60 miles away anytime of the day. I did this with an A99 and about 55w on AM! I'm sure the IMAX 2000 will do even better. |
