I'm looking to get a mobile amp to use on my base station. These two are looking good at a good price, but I'm starting to have concerns. It seems that the Palomar will only put out around 200 watts AM? is that right? If so, why is it rated at the 300 class? From what I read, some websites say the Palomar 250 PEP's around 230 watts +/- 10. So, how much output AM can I expect to get from the 300E? Same questoin for the KL300P. Also, is the watt rating (i.e. 300) only for SSB? and lower on AM? And of course, which of these 2 amps would you choose? Thanks, help will be greatly appreciated! |

I get between 125W and 150W out of my 300P on AM with avout 13.5 V going to it. Been a good affordable amp so far, it's 6 months old. Chad |

georgia235-ALL amps outputs' are OVERRATED!!! makes for better sales! best way to get a close estimate is to find out how many transistors it uses & what they are. find out rated wattage, multiply by # of tansistors. that will be approximate SSB out put. AM dead key will be about 1/3 of that.(example-amp using 2-sd1446 transistors rated at 70 watts each. SSB power should be around 140 watts, AM dead key around 50 watts) that is a VERY rough estimate, but you'll NOT be surprised when that XXXX350 only does 150 watts! depending on your ENTIRE setup-radio, antenna, meters, jumpers, & whatever else is inline, those #'s could vary but that is what is really there. |

Thanks for the info Pat & Chad! I'm not sure that I want to go with either now, I'm wanting 300-500 watts so I can do some real talking. I may just save up and get an X-Force base amp or something of that nature, it'll put out loads more, plus I can plug it straight into the wall. I would still like some info on the KLV 300P if anyone has any. I may decide just to go ahead and get the amp anyways and use it for my base and when I get a good base amp, use them as my mobile. Which would you choose? KL or Palomar? Thanks again! |

the only real difference between the two is that the preamp on the palomar is switchable, and the kl-300p's preamp is on all the time. matt |

Also look into the KL series of base amps, probably more affordable than the X force and you can get one with toobz YAY! I am looking Into the KLV400, but a little strapped for cash now as I just bought a new car and made a nice (to Honda) down payment. Chad |

Not for the 400, I am researching and will let you know. Seems there aren't many out there, there was a guy, Highlander, on here. He lives in my neck of the woods, he has one and knows numbers but I haven't seen him around lately. Chad |

I've got the KL300P. But I'm driving it with a Galaxy DX2547 with 2-3 wattsAM. And whatever it takes on SSB to get 150 out of it depends on my mic gain setting at the time. Chad |

Ah, I see now. I'd be driving it with a Connex 3300, which will DK around 2-3 and swing upwards to 20-25 watts AM on the low side. Could anyone estimate what the approx. power output would be? |

300P was a good choice. I liked the one I had -never owned a Palomar, but I have had 7 Amps from KL (RM Italy) and they were all great. |

All those amps that run the 1446's are pretty much the same - the outputs for all of them are over-rated. You'll see about 140-160 AM Max driving it with a Connex. Maybe 180-220 SSB. I ran a KL200P and saw 100 watts AM and 140 SSB. Good little amp - make sure to add a fan to the top. I run a Magnaforce 200 now - with a stock Cobra it will do a solid 200 AM - with my export it will do 200+ easy. Much more powerful than any of the dual 1446's. |

I've used 300P amps for years......I call them 'disposable' amps........on sale, you can get one for $60/$70 + ship Copper has them for $69.99....... KL-300P It breaks?....get another..... .....they ain't too tough to patch up either. We tested(played with) one on the bench....hit it with over 20 volts........400+ on a bird peak meter.....!! (just a short while---didn't blow) They do need a small fan on the HS.....heat is a problem without it...... My nickel......even.......Ol'Ben |

I run a KL200P. Good performance and they are not that expensive. I'd pick a KL over a Palomar Amp anyday. |
