Anyone familiar with this radio ? How does it compare to the TR-696 or TR-296 ? |

the 296 is closer to an exact copy of the grant/148 radio. it mods the same way, both rcv & xmit mods & gets the same freqs. the 696's(all models with & without freq counter) mod DOWN 12 channels lower top & bottom(won't hit 28 mhz). the other xmit & rcv mods are pretty much identical with some part # & location variations. of those 2, my preference WAS the 296, which like the grant is NO LONGER BEING PRODUCED. grab 'em while they're still out there! have neither seen nor used a 966 yet, for the typical cber though, it is probably a fine piece of equipment. as for those who want to improve on everything they get, it's audio section is supposed to be pretty well locked up(major work for major audio) & it's rcvr is a bit louder in the 'white noise' dept. |

I know mine is . Both set up by same Tech . others may have different experience . The channel conversion is easier on the 696 & 966 , but no problem on 296 . I just generally prefer my 296 to 696 , but they are both fine radios |
