After just a couple weeks since Lon tuned up my 257 (Free) according to the article he has posted, I have to report that it now out-performs my RCI-2950. Both send and receive.

Even the Clarifier is easier to get a match with.

I am running barefoot on a Groundplane antenna -with the stock mic and when the skip is in, I get multiple answers to any CQ I put on the air. And the distances far out class anything I was doing before.

I love it. Thanks Lon.

The 257 is a lot of radio for the dollar. I love mine. If it had the needle style big-face meter it would still be my base. The smooth transmit and the ears (wow what ears!) out hears my 95T. The SSB audio quality has been compared to Kenwood. Barefoot with my Imax (and g/p kit) I could talk to anyone I could hear, including skip stations on am.

BTW, Crackerjack, you will soon reach Advanced membership status at the rate you are posting. Keep up the good post. This is what makes this site interesting.

Patzerozero: Don't get me wrong, I miss my 2950 and my Galaxy -they both had features that the 257 ought to have.

Big meter, scan memory channels, and continuous tune without changing bands are just a few things I wish that the 257 had.

That said -the ability to have mode in the memory and the great ears, coupled with the most generous modulation and swing I have ever owned, Superior clarifier....... -well, I guess the price is too low as well -so I will not object to any of it.

That and I am still looking for a bigger mic. that will outperform the stock mic -what audio reports~~!

Thank God that I got mine before the lights went blue.

Crackerjack,

No speech processor? The new ones rock harder! But those blue lights on the interstate kill me.

I really think if you use the stock mic and have the gains set correctly the speech processor doesn't do as much, but if you have the gain down and a whispy voice the processor pulls it back up (increasing background noise also)

I don't think it will overmodulate. I have mine set at 120%. How did this radio get such good ear? I can't figure it.

If its at 101% it is overmodulating no matter how you cut it

No, the pin assignments are different. If you place a RCI mic on a Magnum, you could short out the mother board.

Well I finally got a chance to test my 257 today. I have had it for about 4 months now and I would like to say that I started a pile-up on Channel 19 this afternoon in the tideWater area of VA. I was getting people from VA beach witch is bout a 25 mile trip from my location. EVERYONE was saying that Radio sounds GOOD, What clear audio, that Radio is LOUD and Clear WHAT KIND OF RADIO IS THAT AGAIN?

I got news for all of you that are considering this radio. It is a gem! I have the Blue light version and I can’t complain at all. Although I have not driven at night with it. I got it from Copper and when bench I tested it, it was getting 106% Mod with a high long whistle Into the mice. Anyone saying that this radio is to quiet on AM is full of it and they are the ones looking to tear up the band for 10 channels. They usually sound like Cr&P. OH, the radio does display the Freq. When I got it that is what was displaying.
I don’t have the manual with me ATT so I don’t know how to switch it to freq display. Well ! I Guess I found a complaint. RFLimited don’t have the manual online cause I sure would like to use the rig on 10mtrs with my DX500.

As for the Mic size, I have pretty thick hands and I don’t have a problem.. I can switch channels without having to reposition the mic in my hands at all. The thing that makes the mic seem to small is the cable size is a little to thick and stiff. If this were changed the mic size would be insignificant.

IT.
