We use the Stock / Factory Magnum 257 Hand Mic for Base and Mobile use. We just haven't found any reason to change it or even try anything else yet as all of the audio reports have been great. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

My thumb keeps hitting the channel change button whule I am talking. That is all I can find wrong with, Does Magnum make a larger muc that works with this radio? Maybe the mic for another Magnum Radio -wired the same and works like (at least as well as) this one? That would be perfect. |

I use my thumb on the key and piont the mic a little to the pass window. This cuts down on noise and doesn't change channels. BTW. I modded mine to have the buttons the "right" way, I should post it if I can find the pics. |

The Delta Force mics work very well on the 257/357, but it's not a power mic like the stock 257 mics. The DF mics are bigger and the channel up and down are on the face of the mic as well. I kept going badk to the stock mic on my 257 and 357, it's louder. |

JellybeanL I know, that mic would be perfect if it were just a little bigger. I guess for most people it is fine, but I have big hands. I wonder what a good technical electronic description of the stock 257 would be, You know -what kind of element, ect. I wonder if someone makes a quality power mice that comes close to the same animal?

Mrnobody : R U pulling my leg? How do you set the modulation level? What are the distant end reports compared to the stock mic, like? Lon tried a D-104 Night Eagle desk mic on mine and the reports were not as good. |

"radio at 1:00" Mic gain, correct? I would probably use a modulation meter, but I am glad to hear thta, the D0104 is my favorite hand-held mic. I may try one, I have a few in 4-pon. |

Wouldn't it be better to run the radio's mic gain more open and the mics power setting less, to save the battery? Seems like if you were to run the mic all the way, the battery would go quicker. Just an observation, more of a question I guess, thanks. |

I run an Astatic 575 on my 257 & 357. Both radios are in mobiles. Reports from locals say it sounds like a base station. |

D104-Handheld ~ I had one wired for the Magnum 257 and set the modulation to 100%. Great reviews. I did one signal check and got an answer from Chicago, not bad for barefoot from San Antonio. |

I know this is an old post but I just found it so thought I would add my comment anyway. I have a New Cool Blue Magnum 257 I have used off and on for a base for a few months and am very impressed with it. About two weeks ago I put it in my van. I continued to talk to the same operators I always talk to. Several times already I have been asked if I bought a new radio. I tell them its a Magnum 257. Then they ask what power mic I am using. They almost dont believe me when I tell them its the stock mic that came with the radio. Then they ask if I am using a power amp. WELL using more than 4 watts would be against the rules wouldnt it? ? ? I am sure no one around here would do that! Anyway I have to agree with 808 Lon and several others on this one. Keep the stock hand mic, it is matched to the radio and sounds great. Its a rare thing anymore for a radio mfg. to include a good mic with a radio. I think thats why most people when they get a new radio, right away think about what kind of power mic to put on it. Because most stock mic's do not sound good. I was very pleased to find the Cool Blue Magnum 257 is an exception. I am very happy with the radio and the stock mic. ( It works great with my KB250HDV. Just set the amp power out control HO HIGHER 1/2 way open, you will sound awesome and you will be heard ) Enjoy your new 257. 73 for now, Have a Blessed Merry Christmas. |

The stock mic IS a power mic. The VR for the mod is behind the board in the mic. Pull the board away from the element and you'll see it. Happy modulating Hank CEF559 |

I've rewired a stock RCI2950 mic. Got even the channel up/down buttons to work. Not as loud as the stock mic, but sure fits the hands better. |

I use the stock Magnum mic on mine. That seems to be the best sounding one. |

it's an old post but I just got my 257 last week. Use the Stock mic. I tried a d-104 desk mic and hand mic, dm-452, and telex rk56. the Stock mic was loudest and sounded best. The d-104's would have been louder technically, but sounded horrible. rk56 sounded the best, but was too quiet. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Sean CEF867 Two tin cans and a string, it's still a contact...BTW, I need my can back when we're done!
