I want to buy a scanner, prolly handheld. I was wondering what I should expect to spend on something decent, or what I can get for around 100-150 bucks.

What features should I look for?

What should I stay away from?

Any other insight?

Chad

Chad, I was just in RS and they had quite a few for around $150 or less. I have the Pro95 Dual Trunking scanner. It suits my needs as everything I listen to is either VHF hi or VHF low. I don't even use the trunking feature. I guess it all depends on what you want to listen to. If your wanting to listen to digital transmissions thats gonna cost big $.

Good topic.

I thought most police frequencies were encrypted?

How do I find out who uses what, while staying "under the radar"?

VERY FEW police frequencies are incrypted 99.99% are open. Now that said it is a felony to decode incrypted radios if you get caught they will toss the book at you. Most states like florida you can lissen all you want even to digi trunking i know here in tampabay we have some digitrunk, GE, and motorola and most cops don't care ..... unless your using this to break the law..... again a felony. Heck the scanner groups even know our shop frequency here at the jail and lissen to me ....... BOARING ...........

Good question .....

Trunking ( 101 )

How it works is lets say you have 20 repeaters computer controled that when you push the PTT on your radio it looks at your radio and finds the next unused repeater. So if repeater #1 is being used your radio is now asigned to repeater #2 .... AND all the radios you need to talk too ( talk group ) are " told " by this master computer to go to repeater #2 this is how your radio and all the other radios wind up on the correct repeater. So you can have 20 groups of people talking at the same time and not hear each other. Now when your done or let the repeater drop ( reset ) your radio keeps in touch by whats called the control channel SO the next time say your boss calls you the master computer may asign him to repeater #14 and in less that .1 sec again your radio is now on #14 ready to hear his call.
NOW the scanner looks for this control channel and uses the talk group information to " LOCK " on to the person you want to hear.

no need to explain it correctly, all you need to know is if your area uses digital trunk tracking, such as the APCO system my local PD uses, your $75 scanner needs to be replaced by a $600 one. at least my 20 year old bearcat still hears the summer boats, FD's, 6 meter SSB garble in FM so i know to hit the RCI, & the numerous folks who still have 49mhz cordless phones & baby monitors..
who added that to my post...i don't listen...
