Well, my personal opinion is that if you want a radio with all the gadgets that Galaxy offers, then yes the 99v is the shiznit.

Personally though, out of Galaxy's radios, I think the 77HML is the best. True, they didn't put a freq counter on them, which is kinda dumb considering it has side bands, but still the best all around Galaxy radio. The price is pretty fair considering it has all the modes and dual finals. I've owned just about every Galaxy radio they have made, and I prefer the 77 to them all. Just my opinion though.

Yes, with a good tune they are all talkers. Mostly due to the fact that most of them carry the same PCB. There are different variations between them, but they are all basically the same radio.

This is meant to cause Pat to bust a main vein. Since you have a 99v, you need to check out the insides of a S9. And compare the faces. They are pretty much the same radio, but the only differences I see are some of the insides. Seems Magnum put a little better parts list together when building the S9. But that's not a Galaxy, so forget that unless it's Pat reading this, HA-HA.

For really hard hitting, the 48T and 95T would be my suggestions. Of course, you're limited to your choices for an amp with these radios, but they do a pretty good job by themselves.

In closing, I think that probably the most voted radio will be the 44v. Seems to be a VERY popular radio with truckers and the like. Funny how it started, probably one guy had one that sounded really great, and look at what it lead to.

OH YEAH!

as for some earlier comments, i NEVER said a GALAXY radio won't get out, i've talked skip on a BAREFOOT lafayette 3 channel walkie talkie, a yosan 200 channel walkie talkie(albeit hooked to my moblie antenna & dx350), a tristar 120-BAREFOOT, & other assorted 'thingies' that barely qualify to be called 'communications equipment'. don't get rid of what you've got if you feel it works & you're happy with it. i just feel there are BETTER choices then GALAXY. even bigbob has seen the light.

Ok I will put in my 2 cents worth and you can all scream at me if you want

The Galaxy 33,44 and 77 were all good in their day (back when they first came out) But at this time there is just so much more out there that are so much better. Galaxy just didnt keep up with the pace of new bigger and better radios
Its time for Galaxy to spend some time and money on research & Devlopment so they can stay in it because the radios they make are liked by so many

Ok now you can shoot me

I liked the connex 3300 that a trucker passing threw town gave me for free. I was like wow this guy is just giving this 2 me? it was my very first 10-meter radio and the last to.He said it would not recieve so i looked in it and the speaker was disconnected.I amediately hopped in the old strate pipe 1984 silverado and drove to the truckstop at 3 am and bought one of those wood grain cobra mics,An ext speaker and a bracket.i hooked the radio up to the mount and it would not turn on.so i pull radio from mount comes on.Do it again same thing.I then got some very high grade velcrow strips and set on my dash and it worked great never did find the problem with mounting it but many people said it sounded great on my 102 inch whip.At some points i could talk from Lexington missouri to grain valley missouri which is about 40 miles apart in my opionion the connex brand is one of the best AM/FM 10 meter Radios ever made and with a tune up there even better.I have been looking at the galaxy 77 i think therealporkchop is right it looks like it is a great radio.Especaily after i put the chrome panels on it and the fancy little add on knobs with red glass to match my old truck.

the ept3600-??? chassis' may not be the ABSOLUTE worst ever made, BUT they are definitely near the TOP of that list! they had POOR receivers, LOUD but very easily overdone AM audio, & those with SSB capabilities lacked BOTH frequency stability & audio quality-especially the moment the 1st cover screw was removed! the differences between the internals of these radios are so negligible as to render the old saying 'new & improved' meaningless, or more to the point, an excuse to adjust the price-upwards of course!. these radios included NOT just the galaxy 2100, II, 33, 44, 55, 66, 73, 77, 88, 99, super galaxy, pluto, sirius, melaka, saturn & 11b base models, but, as well, the superstar 3900 & grant, the dirland & texas star labeled versions of superstar, most northstar 3000-9500 models, mirage 44, 6600, 88, 9900, II, III, eagle 2000 base, excalibur samurai & base, connex 3300, general lee & washington, alan 87 & the cherokee series of cb's.

their attempt with the ept6900-??? series chassis WAS an improvement in receive & transmit, with the 2517-though still NOT uniden 8719/8734 quality. the 45, 48, 93, & 95 tried to build on transmit reputation (again, when 'touched', it usually makes it 'too much'), but to keep costs down, neglected receive quality to the point of leaving out non-vital & using cheaper/lesser quality parts, to the detriment of a receiver that was CLOSE to being considered 'GOOD'. the closest copies are the cobra 148fgtldx(new), connex 4400 & 4800, ranger 99, & rci 2960, 2980 & 6300, & general grant. rci's further attempts with radios such as the 2950/2970/2980/2990/2995/ & dx series, & mirage & sommerkamp copies, as well as rci6900 series, euro 3900, eagle 5000 & galaxy's own 22b & 2527 differ mainly in synthesizer circuitry, but you can find 2 different radios built with the SAME CHASSIS # ETCHED ONTO BOTH HAVING DIFFERENT PARTS VALUES AS WELL AS PARTS DELETED! a reason whay the connex & general radios USUALLY have better receive qualities then the galaxy 'big rig' series radios, even though they should be EXACTLY the same! too many people with too many hands in the same pie, each 1 fighting for another crumb, basically degrading something that actually had possibilities.

then along came galaxy & generals EXACT copies of the uniden 8719/8734 radios! they finally DID IT! but do to copyright infringement, or refusal to keep paying licensing agreement fees or whatever the deal was, they were forced to cease production of the 296. shermans, i believe are still being produced in malaysia, but probably not for much longer. they redid those uniden chassis' to their own specs & came up with the galaxy 949, 959, 2547, & texas ranger 396, 399, 696 base & fd1, 699, & the newer 900 models. again, probably as good or better then many of the 'earlier' cb's that were around, & with modification possibilites that do exist, an excellent choice for the casual cb user, but not quite up to par with the cobra 148 & uniden grant xl/lt.

so, by catering to the 'truck driver' crowd-users that mainly talk short distances, but through a noisy environment, galaxy felt a loud radio was preferable to one with quality receive(whereas uniden figured how to get BOTH qualities into the same package). they have the technology & knowhow to produce a superb piece of equipment, but are satisfied with producing 1 a couple steps down-probably all based on profit. ALL manufacturers experience 'cold solder joint' problems, galaxy/ranger/rci had a bit more of a problem due to the amount of factories pumping out the quantity of radios that they were, so were unable to keep a handle on quality control as well as should have been.

rf limited, &then as magnum int'l made a commitment to design AND build a quality radio. they came out with some FINE radios. as well as some flaws(the 1st series delta forces...)but continue to build for those 'beyond' the truck driver. northpoint copied the magnums in china, but to a lesser quality standard. stryker claims to have done what magnum did-design & build a quality radio. only time will tell. as for galaxy, well they may be the ones driving rolls royces to sam lewis' cadillac. if only because sam is more worried about his customers enjoyment of a good product, then HIS ability to ride in a rolls because of high volume sales of a lesser product.
but, these days, cadillacs aren't that bad

if ya wanna go back to the galaxy-rci-general-etc comparisons, same radio/same board #/different parts, you can look CAREFULLY at just how close the design of the ar3300/3500 is to the uniden grant xl, & the magnum S series is to the YUCK galaxy radios. BUT, if you actually look at all the PARTS involved, you will see where the ar series did a bit better then the unidens & where magnum did a whole LOT better then galaxy. most cars have engines, transmissions, drive axles, frames & bodies. some are copies with refinements, some are totally new engineering. it's the same with cb radios. nobody is paying 10 grand for a cb(like the icom & yaesu...), but only $200-$300. that's why so many boards actually look the same. tinkering here & there changes the price minimally, & provides different areas of the radio that are different from its cousins. the builders don't see cost effectiveness in absolute total 100% redesigns. besides, how much different could it be made???
the point is, galaxy is THISCLOSE to having a decent product, but pump out so many as they are, why change anything? well, that is the reason that i do NOT use galaxy radios. i could not care a drop less if magnum stole a galaxy 99, used its boards & replaced EVERY SINGLE PART for better ALL AROUND PERFORMANCE. i know what a good transmitter can sound like, as well as a good receiver. magnums' is better on both counts. doesn't really matter how they got there.
northpoint has proven nothing to anybody. can NEW ones even be had any longer? does it even matter? the northpoint nt9hp had the reputation of NOT having the quality receive of the S9, nor did it have the talkpower of the topgun radios, or even galaxy, and it was NOT put together very well. same factory or not, that says something about northpoints quality control.
for as long as i can get 8719/8734 type SSB radios, they will be my choice for my skiptalking mobile. magnums' S9 is my runnerup, if only because i won't change what works for me. BUT my S9 sits right on my rack, used whenever the need for its superior receive is required! it can't quite outhear my ic735 on SSB, but on AM it can outhear EVERY other radio i have

Calm down cheesey!! It's going to be ok!!

I love my Magnum too, the only Galaxy I have left is my 77 and probably won't ever own another one, except well, maybe the 95T. I have to admit that, I mean the Big Rig Series radios are pretty nice, mostly because they have the higher power and all that. But I haven't seen a Galaxy that could compare to the Magnum.

But hey, ain't this suppose to be a post about Galaxy and not anything else???

Ya know,I had the money to buy an s-9 and supply when I bought the dx-2517,I was looking for a base to replace my eagle 2000,and EVERYONE said for the money and quality the dx-2517 could not be beat, the s-9 was new the dx had been around a while and I wanted the best advice because money is tight. Please Pat is there any mods like parts subs that I can do without lots of tech equipment to upgrade my 2517 to increase reciever sensitivity,or do I just pack away everything and take down the antenna and give up my username and password and take up smoking again and forget about this forum.Bigbob

in theory, bigbob, you could get in there, trace part for part, & change 'em ALL, til ya get what you're looking for. the receiver's design is different, the 2sc2999 mod won't work. i barely have enough time in the day to get any sleep, so further investigation ain't happening. besides, every time i put a galaxy on my bench i have to disinfect & decontaminate everything. such a hassle!
i never smoked, but taking up DRINKING would be a thought!
i've seen some crazy prices on the Internet auctions. ya never know, start with a TALL reserve...

the 88 galaxy that i have is one of the best radios i have ever owned ,i think the loudest and clear bare f00t radios here in this area.the only thing i have done to it is set the modulation and wattage,on ssb it is very stable after warm up no drift,i dont try to get more out of the radio then it was made for, with the turner plus three it is fantastic

Picked up a Galaxy Pluto from a friend a few months ago. I refreshed it with a new Chrome DX88 bezel and faceplate... mild peak and no clipped parts... talks VERY well...so I'm told.
I always hear how loud the 99's are. If I were to buy a Galaxy it would be the 99. A friend has the 95T and it rocks but like mentioned above..the choices are limited with amps unless you go REALLY large and they are expensive. I looked for a 99 used till Pats ranting :-) guilted me into an S-9 thinking I'd be missing out on something. Bought the ESS-NINE and you can have it when you pry BOTH mics out of my COLD DEAD HANDS! :-) DAMN thats a loud radio...FIRST time I've ever been asked.."your talking from where? Is that thing barefoot?"
Sorry for the Galaxy thread Hi-jack.....if I were asked..I personally would buy the 99 if I wanted sideband or the 45 for just AM. Hook up yer amp of choice or just talk clean.
Can't speak for the base versions although Starface IS one heck of a MODULATOR! :-)

When someone finally puts two 2290's on a radio with SSB they have a chance at being the reigning champ. Until then the 95T carries the belt.
The receive on my 93T was stellar, quiet and sensitive all the way. As good as my Omega Force, Alpha Force, Grant XL, Grant LT, and Uniden 78 Elite. That was my most pleasant suprise about the radio.
I read elsewhere that Sam Lewis was planning a 150 Watt version similar to the 95T and Connex 4600 of the S-3, S-6 and S-9 early next year. I hope that is true.
We shall see.
Right now the 93/95T can't be beat in terms of features, channels, receive, and power.

Point man I agree with you. That said,I just don't have any problems with my 95T. Nothing breaks down, if it is built from like Pat says, it has yet to fail. Maybe I am lucky. If I need more power, I turn down the input and use a Texas. Way out in the country with no interferance I get out over 100 miles on sideband repeatedly and the RF gain takes care of any backround noise. Maybe Galaxy has flooded the market with a lot of garbage in the past but my radios work great and they will likely be around for awhile. When I need another radio, sure, I'll try and S-9, love to.

Hehehe, the old Superstar 3900s, 949s, etc. aren't so bad after you do about $20.00 worth of modifications to them...

I have a SS 3900 HP Gold that I installed PIN diodes and a low noise RX amplifier transistor (2SC2999) in , and it makes an excellent radio -AFTER all of the mods are done.

To me, a lot of the attraction of these types of radios is seeing how they can be improved-especially in the RX department.

However, if I'm looking for perfection "out of the box," I'll definitely buy something else.

Patzerozero,

It may have been funny but a Moderator may have deleted it if it had nothing to do with the topic that was posted which was:

Whats the best radio galaxy ever put out??

Things tend to get way out of control real quick when things jump off the original topic/question.

And when a person making a post is asking for advice or help, it will help them and others who may find the topic at a later date when doing a search with any questions they may have on the same or similar topic.

I am sure you will understand as we are all just trying to help answer peoples questions with the best answers that we all have since none of us knows everything about anything and this makes it a team effort in trying to offer help.

I think the Galaxy 95T is the latest and greatest for a mobile and the Galaxy 2517 for a base. These radios are just plain LOUD.
