Snapperhead, When it comes to the 79-290,I find 2 types of people. Those that like it and those that hate it.I am of the first group.I normally dont run a radio in the vehical but have since decided it was the one I wanted in there.Mine does not suffer the bleedover most users report and the noise i recieve is generated by the engine mamagement computer.some day if it gets annoying enough i might do something about it,for now it is tolarable. It's features are; 3 color florescent display choice of displaying channel# or frequency 4 memory presets instant ch9 and 19 10 weather channels dual channel watch mic boost 4 modes(am,fm,usb and lsb) fine and course clarifier dual finals and heatsink rear panel removable faceplate and easily modded for extended coverage(if so desired) the nearest equivelent seems to be the Magnum 257 all in all,I am happy with the midland 79-290 tech291 cef#291 kc8zpj |

Dennis, I agree with your post, for such a small package it delivers a lot of features. Mic replacement is a must, I use an Astatic d1o4 M6B for base use and a Road Devil when mobile. Mine has been peaked and tuned and swings to 28 watts on a Yaesu peak reading meter. While it is no Uniden Grant it is a good compromise for putting in the smaller vehicles. I can't comment about adjacent channel interference because quite simply down this corner of the globe there is not too much traffic on CB bands. And because my vehicle is diesel I dont have problems with electronic noise. I too am very happy with my Midland 79-290. Murray |

Good deal guys, thanks for the insight.......I myself love my bootlegged Uniden chassis radio's. My old school 148gtl is my favorite......I also run a older RCI-2950 in pickemup truck......I couldn't pass up the price on this used radio......I bought it before I researched it..... Just wanted one, even though I already have a couple of rigs laying around....Just thought i'd give her a shot....How about stability on SSB.....Is she a sailboat like some other radio's in her price range. I'll probably run her as a base on a power supply, with a Turner Super Sidekick and 2 pill (Palomar Super Base).......Thanks again all for insight........73's and good DXn' |

Snapperhead, Mine has proven to be very stable on Frequency and I think that Turner Super Sidekick will work very well for you. I take it that you know how to access the extra channel's with it, just in case I will tell you here. With radio turned off hold in the channel 9 and dual watch buttons while turning radio this will give you 6 bands (marked A to F) of 40 channels to revert to the standard 40 do the same again. This will give you coverage from 25.615 to 28.305 but remember unless you are licenced don't go above 28.000mhz because this is the start of the ham 10 meter band. If you want to go to the 10 meter band hold in the mic and LCR buttons while turning the radio on and do the same to exit this band. This gives you coverage from 28.000mhz to 29.700mhz. Enjoy your new rig. Murray |

Tech 291 says:"Snapperhead, When it comes to the 79-290,I find 2 types of people. Those that like it and those that hate it." Jake says:I am in the 2nd group! This was a radio I really wanted to like, it had a lot of features and possibilities. just my opinion, but there are better choices. I'd trade two 79-290's for one mag 257. maybe some of the techs here can comment on them but i do not think they are as similar as people think they are. this is just based on my experience and quick glimpses at the circuit boards, i didn't actually study it. if size is a concern and you want ssb: the 257 wins. |
