Hi and hello from England.
I am a Class A Ham, but also enjoy 11m SSB, (naughty huh?)
Mobile I use a Yaesu FT 857D and ATAS antenna. I have modded the rig and it now continuous TX/RX from .03 to 450Mhz, and the antenna will work all the HF bands from 7Mhz to 50Mhz, all through, (as well as 2m and 70cms)
I have to say I am very pleased and have worked new york on 11m today!

I've always wondered how the screwdrivers would work into the 11m area and how well they would do. |

I had the ATAS 120 non "A" version and had bad luck using it especially when it rained. I had to disassemble the antenna and dry it out for it to work again. The very next day it rained once again and the ATAS stopped working, I dried it out once again and a week later , same thing 
I cleaned it up and sold it and went to a High Sierra Sidekick.
I have heard the new ATAS 120A has cured the water problem but I am to scared to spend the 350 dollars when I am happy with the High Sierra |

As delicate as chantilly lace, falls apart with constant mobile use, rain renders it unuseable. Save your dosh and buy High Sierra, simply the best! |

Yeah, Hi-Q is probably the best tunable HF stick out there. The High Sierra models are very well built however, and perform well. I doubt that the difference would really be noticed, performance wise in the real world ops. The ATAS models obviosly have water issues, and if yer hammin' down at the lower freqs (40 meters, etc) the ol ATAS just won't perform like the big boys. I have used the original Don Johnson W6AAQ screwdrivers many times, and they work out well. Don is the godfather/inventor of the screwdriver driven antenna concept. He published some great books called "40 years of HF mobileering" Great read, if you're into the how and whys of antenna design & performance. |
