These are just great radios,
strongly recommend them, takes a 2 minute mod and you have tx/rx 0-450Mhz all mode, with 100 watts to 50Mhz, 50 watts to 200Mhz and 20 watts above that.

Full featured with everything your heart could desire, just got to work out how to fit an echo in it

LOL

No, you can fully open them, check out mods.dk, in the discussion forum, just remove all the jumpers, TX/RX all modes 0-450 Mhz...

Gotta be good

The FT-857 and FT-857D have different procedures.

What about offsets for repeaters?

It (857D) has auto repeater offset. This feature goes away with the transmit expand as does the Alaska emerg channel. I'm not sure what else goes away. It, nearly as I can tell, reverts it back to the 857 (nonD) firmware and still had use of the DSP.

With auto repeater offset does it do this on FM upper end of 10 meters? Just sounds too handy to lose.

Just to clarify--you only lose the AUTO repeater offset--you can still set the repeater offset to the correct setting manually, in all bands, including 10 meters.

Yep that's right, honestly, after you lose it it becomes ingrained in your mind where it needs to be. It still offsets, just not automatically as you move the VFO. For example you just have to select positive, negative, or no shift. It still DOES shift though. Look at the 2M/440 shift chart about 3 times and you won't need the auto feature.

There IS a Yahoo forum for the 897 and another for the 857, both are VERY informative.
