very cool 1861, isnt it crazy the difference in the noise level between those old unidens and the new lot of "export" radios? i know you're not going to start digging into that radio anytime soon, but just so you have it, here's the info on making that already good receiver even better. (these i got from pat00, and they work great) change TR14 to a 2SC2999 or NTE107 put the 2SC1674 you removed from the TR14 spot and replace TR19 with it. change D1 and D2, D21 and D22 to NTE 583's. you'll love the way it sounds even when no one is talking. matt |

Jessie: Welcome to the world of the best Uniden chassis that was ever made, I have it's country cousin the Uniden Grant XL. After the mods that Matt has posted the 148 is even a much better receiving radio. The transistor change does wonders with the static floor level, pulls out stations that were down in the static level. |

Does these mods work with the dynascan cobra 2000, It`s hard to believe you can inprove these radios recieve cause the grant xl and cobra 2000 I have are real nice on recieve. quiet and pick up faint stations better than all the other radios I have all though my sears picks up great but has more static in background. I wish I could find someone to do these mods for me, I want to learn but not on my like new radios and I dont have the funds to buy others to practice on. I would love to get big radio reports from the grant and 2000 like I get from my 696FD1 which is believe it or not stock except for the 452 power/echo mic I put on from coppers. it alone made a big difference. I HAVE ALOT OF RADIOS I HAVE MODDED MYSELF , AND MOST CAME OUT GOOD , BUT CONSIDERING WHAT THIS ONE IS , AND NEVER USED CONDITION , I AM GOING TO SEND IT TO THE BEST TECH I KNOW AND HAVE IT WENT THROUGH AND SET UP TO ITS ULTIMATE -- IT,S A KEEPER FOR SURE . |

Roger: Yes, for the most part, the mods for the 148 and Grant XL/LT will work on the Cobra 2000 GTL. With the exception of the clock/counter, built in power supply and dual clarifier, other wise the 2000 is the same radio. |

airplane1, the biggest hurdle to doing your own radio work (besides the vast knowledge) is good soldering skill. the best way to learn, aside from schooling or military, is to buy some kits from Ramsey or any other electronic kit manufacturer, and assemble them and see if the preverbial "light comes on". once you can do this, try looking at the small circuit diagrams that you find online for tone generators, op amps, receiver preamps and the like. see if you can put the parts together on a breadboard (search on the word if you dont know what it is) and make your own little circuits. if you can do these things, you should have no problem replacing a transistor or two inside an old CB radio. good luck, matt |

I wouldn't get any modifications done to it at all. I'd save it for a collector's item or trade bait. You could probably sell it for at least twice what you paid for it on an auction site - maybe more. I prefer to buy used radios for modification or daily use. That way I don't feel bad when I accidentally scratch them or decide to open them up and play. |
