Anyone have any experience with these radios?

I keep putting off buying one, but am always drawn back to it. Nice features, Ranger quality.....what do you think?

If you have one, what mic do you use?

Hey Bert... All I get is flowers as the 4800DXL is my pride and joy base setup. I use a Texas Star DX500v with it. All the radio a 4 pill can ask for. AM is awsome and SSB is even better. It has 480 channels not counting what the 10 kc switch does. The noise blanker is very good and does not effect any recieve audio when on. Its very loud and VERY CLEAN and crisp I have never had mic gain past 3 0 clock. I use the Astatic 636 with it while waiting for the new desk mic from Copper to come out. After around 15 minutes its very stable on freq. From cold to warm it will drift about 2 kc's depending on how cold or warm it gets but at constant room temp its dead on. Excellent ACR and better than any radio I ever have owned. Best and most sensitive recieve radio I ever owned. I get the respect on the air this radio is due not to mention the hell from those who are jealous. Very much worth every penny and I recommend this radio to you. You will be pleased!

Thanks for the post Hotwire!

I've wanted one for so long and when I went to buy one about a year ago, no one had them in stock.

In the meantime I proceeded to buy a bunch of other radios. But I keep coming back to the Connex. I've heard great things and I really like the clean lines of the radio and the 6 digit frequency counter.

Frequency coverage is from 24mhz to about 29mhz?

Sounds like you have a winning combination there. Do you mind telling me what the new mic is?
Who did the mods on the radio?

Questions, questions, I hope you don't mind, as I do appreciate the help.

Hey Bert! My Connex 4800 is totally stock. I did adjust my dead key to 2 watts. The 4800 needs no tweaks or peaks and I strongly suggest not to let just anyone do any mods to it. It rocks the way it is. I'm sure that a QAULIFIED tech could wring a few more watts from it and maybe even toss in some bells and whistles and better diodes and such but I like mine the way it is.
I see I caught your interest about the new COMPRESSION DESK MICROPHONE from Copper! Bert I have a feeling this mic is gonna rock. Some techs on this very forum have used it and helped with the design of it. These guys have been in the biz for a long time and know their stuff up and down. Many of us here at Copper have been help by these guys with our problems and they are glad to help. Good people and honest people. This new mic should be ready in Febuary and you can check it out in the subsciber preview!

Bert I fibbed. I did convert it to cover cb freqs. So I guess its not completely stock. Just the reciever is stock I suppose unless the store aligned it without telling me. The tranmit dead key is adjusted to 2 watts. I am thinking about slappin on some of those nice shiny chrome covers.

On the Connex 4800DXL both the course and fine tune clarifier are fully functional.
Fine tune is just that....to fine tune your recieve.
Now the course adjust your transmit and recieve. What I do is use the course to set the freq I want. Key the mike and set transmit freq. Unkey and then use fine to tune in a contact.

Both clarifiers will change the display on the freq. counter. The corse will tune both TX and RX. The fine will only tune your receive. I know this is how the model with echo works and would assume the old style is the same.

Patzerozero and Moonraker are right. I really like the 4800 also Freebird. No care for the echo really but the only REAL complaint about the 4800 I have is the center notch that the course clarifer has. When you get close to it the knob kinda wants to lock into place makin it a little tricky to tune center freq.

No drift at all with my radio! If its really cold I must give it a few minutes to warm up. Its a very good ssb radio Freebird. I really did my homework too before I purchased mine and its worth every penny!

I was used to good ole 148s also! Don't worry the daul clarifier is no sweat. You'll wish you had gotten one sooner. The best thing about it is having a freq counter for SSB.
