Realistic brand radios sold by Radio Shack years ago were pretty decent rigs and insides was full of Uniden parts so I imagine Uniden made them. The newer radios I hear are lesser than average of whats out there today and more $$$$! For just starting out it should suit your needs until the bug really bites you. Wanna make it work better? Antenna is everything! Stay away from Radio Shack antennas and walmart antennas. Get a good antenna like a Wilson or maybe the 102 inch whip. Try a search here at Copper about antennas. Since your new to radio the best advice I can give is to educate yourself here! STAY AWAY FROM CB SHOPS! Until you know what your looking for. |

The TRC-446 isn't made by Uniden. It's probably made by Maxon like most of their recent CBs. Years ago Radio Shack started getting their own radios made and part of their specification was that they were to be unmodifiable for extra frequencies. Some have dual 455kHz filtering which made them pretty decent at rejecting adjacent channel interference. |

you could hear the people in california because of a phenomenon called, "skip". it has to do with sunspot activity affecting radio signal propagation. the signals you were hearing were being "bounced" off of the ionoshere and being beamed back down to your area. the signals will rise and fall in strength because the conditions are constantly shifting. do a search on "sunspot cycle" for more info. (you can talk back to them!) matt |
