they have made a few production corrections, & there are a couple service bulletins out on the cobra 200. MY OPINION ONLY(), based on limited use, is that it requires TLC by its owner, & benefits greatly from some massaging by a certain couple of people who seem to have the inside track on these radios. i don't think that is in the best interests of the end users, however. while the S9, or any radio for that matter, may not be the 'end-all, piece of perfection', i am more impressed with its receiver section, its modulation on BOTH AM & SSB, & i think if you wait another couple of months, the 80 watt version will definitely give the cobra 200 a run for its money overall, no matter what its claimed or realized wattage is. i know of several people who have gotten rid of their cobra 200's. 1 was replaced with a lincoln, that talks every bit as good, if not better, then his cobra, at 1/5th the power, & the receiver of the lincoln is hands down the winner. another was found to be a distant 2nd to the rci6900ftb/150 it was meant to replace. so much so, in ALL respects, that the rci is back in use & the cobra went the way of e*auction. not surprisingly, the used cobra sold for more then a new 1 from copper... |

Ihave a 200 and it is an excellent talker...but the reciever takes a back seat to my S9. If you are in a quiet area...away from channel 19 it could well be a great radio. |

The 2 cobra 200's I have heard do not sound as good as an S9. I have also heard bad things about the cobra's receive. The 200 does have more power but in my opinion the S9 is a better radio. |

I have heard a few good sounding 200's but I was not impressed with the power they are supposed to have. Sounded to me just like a regular dual final radio. If it is POWER ya want then just buy an S-9 and a DX500 sit back and find out what it means to be the KING! Or better yet grab a Connex 4800 and a DX500 kick back and relax. Press the button on the mic and RULE upon all measley inferior mudduck radios! |

Wait on the 180 watt version of the S-9. Good things come to those who wait. It's supposed to surface sometime this year, I think. mikefromms |

actually, i gotta wait now & see how the 175 watter(&even the 80 watter) are run. what dead key & what full PEP will work...the original S9 is different in that, normally, 1 watt key & 40 watts PEP sounds like junk. these don't. will the new ones REALLY key LOW & SWING full? my 4 pill davemade will handle every bit of PEP from my ar3500, & i'm sure the 175 watt S9 will not overmatch it either. SO, maybe my 8 pill is too small? maybe a 16 would be better? . will just have to wait for these new magnums to become available...if i can't get out, i'll have to buy a bigger box |

EASY PAT! Down Boy! Planning on givin ol Painkilla a run for his money there? Why stop at 16 pills? Just use the 8 pill Dave as a driver box and go 32 pill! VanillaGorilla could take off the headphones now! He may need earplugs but hey! |

Thanks Lon. Hey Hook! What you see before you in my honest opinion for the money with its features and quality is the best cb amp you can buy! Sure there is bigger and the customs are made a bit better but the power and ease of use is great. One thing I hate is unclean audio! Drive this amp right and your audio will be nice clean and loud. I drive mine with a 2 watt dead key and 8 watt swing! If you believe me it outputs its advertised wattage and more SSB. I don't have the loudest audio but loud enough and have been mistaken for a base 30 miles away. I can drive it harder I suppose but while mess with success? Working with Pat I have achieved my best mobile install ever with VERY little reflect! The DX500 is the best amp for any mobile station! With very little or NO modifacation to your charging system! 73 |

Here is my S9 story. My AR3300 gave up and I despared of finding something as good. 4 weeks ago I bought a S9. I line haul for a frieght outfit and talk to about 20-30 other drivers a day, a lot of them run high dollar radios. when my AR when down the constant comment was "when are you going to get your AR fixed", but not anymore. I have had more positive feedback on this radio than any other I have ever owned, and I am not even running my TS 350HD with it. I stop at my local hackshack today to get a new 636 mic and he gave me 10$ off because he has already sold 2 more S9's just to drivers that have heard mine. I know of 3 drivers at my outfit that will be getting one soon. So how does it compare with the 200? Can't really tell you, but if you can swing the price, why mess with anything else when the S9 is that good out of the box? As far as amps go, just get a Texas Star and you will be very happy. Line hualing I have to haul my gear in and out of my truck every day, thats hard on good equiptment, the TS has always been the most durable and least finiky amp I have ever run, and I have run some of the best (can you say m400 or m600?). And there you have it, just for what is worth. |

Having had a 200 and having 2 S9's currently, I can tell you that the reciever is better on the S9 although the noise blanker is better on the 200. If you have Wizard in Chicago go thru it, it will outtalk the S9, BUT...if you can't hear 'em you can't talk to 'em. OTOH...the rx on my old 148, while not quite as sensitive as the S9 is right up there with it and it has better filtering. If you are planning on running barefoot...it's S9 all the way. If you have a little something to put behind it, I'd still think carefully about a nice Grant or 148. YMMV hibuck.... |

Hibuckhobby! I agree with you bigtime! A Grant or 148 rocks. I have one of the new 148 GTL's with a DX 500. I know the new 148's are not like the old ones. I have a very good tech who is real good on these Cobras. In my 148 he replaced close to 40 componets with much high qaulity componets. The result was super clean and loud audio and a recieve that is better than my Connex 4800! In my opinion theres nothing like the sound of a well tuned cobra with a texas star amp. |

Looks like the buyers here at copper have spoken. See the post on the forum that states the Cobra 200GTL as the no. 1 seller. Mikefromms |
