I picked up on an older amp with the MRf-454's (2 of 'em) in it, and my question to the amp guru's is, what is a safe input drive for these "pills"? From what I have deciphered in searches is that this transistor can take 8-10 watts input @ 12.5 volts to produce 80 watts @ 30MHZ (AM) out each. Is this correct? I have read that the MRF 455's do not like more than 3-4 input, so I am a little leary of over driving any Motorola transistor. I would like a little input on this before I pour the juice to them. It doesn't take long to realize a goof up. (Puff!) ..Thanks, radio gods....AD |

your 80 watt mrf454's should be keyed to get a max output of 20 watts each, dead key, for a total 40 watt dead key. SO, start with your radio keying LOW, & adjust it up til the amp shows 40 watts on the meter. if your radio is modulated well, you'll see about 160 watts PEP swing. check for heat, add fans, whatever & you may find you can dead key a few more watts, or you may have to back off a bit. whatever dead key from the radio it takes to get to 40 is where you should be |
