Ok, I am fully aware that there are specs available at texasstar.com. But I want to talk to someone who knows or owns one of these. I can't get this thing to key low enough. I don't have the varieable, I have the one with the am button. I just don't want to use the low button because its just a resistor and those burn out. I tried keying as low as 1 watt into this thing and it wond do below 50 watts, theres not much swing either. What does yours do

Have your tried opening the radio and setting the deadkey in the radio lower?

I've got one of the old Skeleton 250's or something like that and one of the same like yours.

I don't understand why there isn't much swing. I assume your radio has swing to it, right? I'd try turning the key down inside the radio. Are you reading the power on a PEP meter? If it's RMS then I assume you wouldn't see a lot of swing. My two will do probably 175 or so on the PEP side. But I believe both of mine are 2 pills. I can't remember, I can't even remember what they are suppose to have. Someone's be pittleing in mine...

That's the thing, I have set the dead key in the radio to 1 watt. Still with the radio keying 1 watt I get about 40 or 50 watt key out of that amp. If drive the modulator with 4 watt key and leave the amp on the low setting it will key about 20 and swing from there. Thants what I want when the amps on high but I just cant key low enough. Those varieable pots fail a lot in those texas stars. If the pot fails my xforce 400 gets slammed and it will smoke.

what kind of radio do you have?
1)turn radio up
2)replace resistor with larger watt
3)remove 1 wrap on input transformer.

That's good advice, it's best when someone who knows what they are talking about tries to help...

If you don't wanna do that though, why don't you just turn the key farther down in the radio?

Quit wasting your time, and just get a nice 1446- 2290- or 2879 2 pill amp(Use the 2 pll 1446 amp to drive your x-force). Once you finally get your radio dialed in to the texas star modulator amp, and see what you're getting as far as output, you're gonna want to go bigger anyway. Just my thoughts.

my radio is a uniden pc78, I turn L12 I believe it is. It's the coild in the back right behind the transistor. I turn that to lower the key and can only get as low as 1.5 watts out of it. That input will still make that amp key very high, probably like 50 watts or so. Then when I put it on low the amp will do like 4 watts and swing to 30. I think the ts mod would be good for just using on its own. It does not make a very good exciter for that amp. My radio can't drive my xforce well either. That xforce requires a good amount. Thanks for the advice though, I would like to change the resistor, but do not know how. I will have to look at the schematic

try removing 1 wrap from the input transformer 1st.
that will lower you dead key out the amp.
you'll also have to turn up the radio a lil.
o.k. alot..
running around around with a 1 watt radio...
