I do not know what I was thinking, but I just bought an 897D. Sold all my other radios, but my Ranger AR-3500 and I am glad I didn't, because the newer model 8897Ds will not take sofware modifications. Found this out after buying the radio. No 11 meters unless I go in and solder jumpers.

Sold my Yaesu FT-757GX, Ft-221R and my RCI 5054dx100, to pay for this radio. I actually made enough money to buy some great accesories.

So far it is a great radio. I think the Noise Blanker and the receive were a touch better on the 757, but I am still playing with it. I bought the LDG AT897 matching auto tuner and a Daiwa HF-VHF true peak meter. I control the radio from my computer with Ham Radio Deluxe.

I bought it, because I like the fact that is is truly portable. The batteries and charger came with it. I bought it from a ham who's kid decided he did not like camping after on e trip. Radio was a week old and came with all the toys for $850.00

I will continue to try out all the modes including digital and let you know what I find. The menu is a bit complicated and takes some time to learn. I am in the process of getting it to work with my Dentron MLA-2500 amp.

One good thing, my radio room is not so clutered anymore with all those radios. I am looking into one of those mulit-band moble antennas that cover 80-6 meters by just changing the jumper for on the road.

Cool, I just bought the 857D, it's little brother. I've got the menu thing whipped but every now and then.......

Yes, expansion is done via soldered in jumpers, I popped it open to look inside (just had to) and they are tiny, if you do not have the appropriate tools to work on SMT stuff then I would go at it with caution!

Congrats man! I'm really enjoying my 857!

I have a 857d for the last year, it is a fun and out standing radio, if you operate 6 meters it is a work horse if you hear them you will work them.
I get good reports on mine, and have no intention to get it on 11, to good of a radio, will use my galaxy still or road talker

google yaesu ft897d transmit modifications, there are a # of 'free' sites to get that info from. the 1st one that shows up....go to the top left side of the page, click on 'yaesu', go to the model you want, then look for the modification you want. for that particular model, they have a 24 page 'modification sheet!!!! all kinds of stuff!!!

I love my FT-897d. It has a big sound. Gets great reports for small all purpose rig. Looking at getting the 857d for the car. I think it's the same radio and power on all the bands as the 897d.

I've had my 897D since May. went with the W4 battery packs @ about $40.00 cheaper than the Yaesu on a well known auction site, But with the Yaesu charger, LDG897 tuner and the optional remote mic. Havn't got any HF/6 Antennas up as yet. get good reports on vhf with the mic gain set @ 35. Temporarily residing in A nursing home. at least they have Internet :-)
