Like to get a good bc796d scanner because everything here will soon be going to apco25 between now and spring.

I'm interested in this too Steve,
90% of our Pleece Farce have gone digital as well. Waiting to see if the new digital scanners will actually pick up or are the country's "Fine"est going to be scrambled.

Well Hype On the digital or trunking they more than likely won't be doing any scrambling it just a regular scanner wont rx their transmissions and the digital apco25 capable scanner will rx the mode..I have 1 already, its the older version bc785d that the card had to be gotten for and works great, but I do need 1 more
for another room for the Mrs.
There are a few counties close to us that has already gone to it and we tried the regular and it was a NO GO, all you hear is white noise like an open squelch. But then I turned the digital one on that has their freqs in it and WHOLLAAA there she be Mate...So we both need to get one..

Won't be long and the price of those digital scanners will come down and I can get one. Last time I checked they was around 500 dollars for a portable at Radio Shack.
At first I was told the scanners were in the thousands of dollars.
Trying to remember, it was about maybe close to 7 years ago(give or take) one day I turned on my scanner to monitor the local police and it was dead. So I figured they changed freqs and went to radio shack cause I knew a ham there who may know where they went. He told me they was in a testing stage and that Johnson County in Indiana was the first agency to try out the new system in the country. Not sure if that was so I would imagine many others tested it out as well. So far the only agency in Indiana using the digital is the Franklin Police(maybe Greenwood) in Johnson County, that I know of. Indianapolis is still on 800 mhz trunked since the late 80's early 90's.
The biggest problems was that different local police agencys could not communicate with each other. They all need to convert at the same time. Many problems occured when the county vehicles could not contact the state vehicles.

The New bearcat 996t will probably be one of the first to get popped if they start that around here since it is the newest of the digital scanners.
Everything will eventually be digital.

So, if I get a digital scanner, will my local police still be able to scramble or will I be able to hear them fine? Do I need that card?

digital and scrambling are not the same it is LEAGAL to copy digital it is ILLEAGAL ( check FCC rules covering scrambled signals ) to descramble any public safety signals.

check with your local police since in some states it can get you jail time ........
