I would love to hear from anyone that ones this radio. I am in the market for a nice SSB radio but I do not want a full size chasis. I like the idea of it haveing non-smd design. This makes it easier to get serviced. I know it is a different board then the 949/959 is this little radio stable on SSB? How does it sound? Oh and is Copper going to start carrying them. These would sell much better then the Ranger CB's I am preety sure. |

I've used a 979 for about the last year in my mobile set up. Its been a solid performer so far. It seems to drift a little on ssb & am until its warmed up then its solid. The audio reports I've recieved on SSB have been good with no complaints. The audio reports I've received on AM have been good and hearing it myself on my base, it sounded fine. Where I purchased it from they did a swing kit mod. With the variable power turned down it keys 2 and swings to 15. With the variable turned to max it keys 6 and swings about 18. With the stock mic if the mic gain is turned past 12 o'clock it sounds distored. Using a Astatic 636L the mic gain can be turned all the way up and it sounds fine. The receive can pull in the faint signals no problem but you do have to deal with a little bit of backround noise until you hear someone key up. I also have a Grant XL which is much quieter than the 979. I have been happy with this radio for its size(I have to fit it in a Mitsubishi Eclipse) and its features for the price. I have to remove the radio every day from the mobile due to theft issues and it has taken a beaten without any problems yet. I hope this helps Johnbrowing. Have a good one! Corn Dog CEF820 |

I am trying to fit an SSB radio in a Camry. I have limited space as well. My Lincoln is simply too wide.It is hard enough to find a good SSB radio and trying to find a small one is even harder! |

Better late than never............ I have owned two DX-979's and long story short I think they are great radios all the way around. I talk a lot of side-band and one of the two I bought would not be aligned on side-band. Took it to a factory authorized shop and he couldn't get it on frequency either. We called tech support who said they get some lemmons occasionally and they would have exchanged mine for a new one but I voided the warranty by opening the clarifier. Make sure it is tuned properly by someone qualified if you choose to void the warranty and it is probably one of the better radios out there for the money. Talk back, echo, beautiful back-lit display. You will need to buy a frequency counter if you want one, this radio comes without it because it is built to fit in tight spaces. |
