Would it be possible to coat the outside of a fiberglass antenna with metal? If so would it work better than just the wire up the middle? I already have a metal top section on my a99 with a metal gpk. The bottom two fiberglass sections are sturdy, very little give.

You can't coat the outside with metal, but you could replace the fiberglass shell with wire inside, using metal tubing.

I don't think you are going to improve the performance of that antenna without replacing it with an Imax 2K or other similar 5/8 or .64 wavelength antenna. When all is said and done it will still be a half wavelength.Don't bother with the Firestik upgrade , I tried that and that didn't work either.

I agree, be alot easier to upgrade to a
more efficient antenna.
