its the receiver design that really makes this chassis stand out.
if you're not someone who pays much attention to the background noise on your radio or the lack of it, you may well miss some of the draw of this radio.

with some radios, you need to have the squelch up just to maintain your sanity.
with this chassis, you can listen to everything out there and the sound is pleasing.
if you are into modding radios, there is so much that can be done to this radio it will make your head spin.
check out the profile of GUMPIT1 in the MEMBERS PICTURES area for a VERY cool freq. mod for this chassis.
they really did break the mold when they deisgned this chassis, and apart from the HR2510, and the AR3500, the receiver has not been paralled in the CB community.
i for one am a big fan,
matt

It has great audio on AM and SSB. It has good recieve that can be made even better with a few parts swaps. It is incredable stable in terms of freq.!! It is durable and will operate almost anyplace on earth with little effort. It was always easy to modify for more channels. Many of them would swing to 20-22 watts on AM and I never found one that did less then 32 watts on SSB. If you add audio clipping to these radio's the audio will punch through a pile up like no ones business. The only radio FCC type accepted mobile radio that was ever better was the Palomar 500SSB early model and those were never sold in the numbers that the Uniden chasis was. To add to that many of the 10 meter export radio's like all of the old models of Galaxy's Connex,NorthStar etc....were copies of the Uniden Export Chasis but not 100% copy. The Uniden Export Chasis was usualy a board about 70% identical to that used on the Grant with a 858PLL and a bout load of binary adders and single and dual final models. The RCI 2950's audio and recieve sections are based on the Uniden Export Chasis design. Now if someone is not into SSB then I would never recomend this radio their are plenty of cheaper AM radio's taht sound just as good on AM.

I think one thing that the Grant and 148 had going for them was cost. They cost more so you elimanated a lot of people that apreciate them. You also due to cost saw fewer people doing their own modifactions to them so fewer were butchered as compared to much cheaper AM only units. Many of them were used with a power supply as base station setups so they were heard by a lot more people under what could be called ideal conditions. Not a lot of Uniden 510's with a short rubber ducky antena are going to be heard by very many people(for examble).

Oh I almost forgot the board layout and parts placement was almost perfect!!!If you look at some cheap Chineese radio's the parts are all over the place and almost nothing is over it's coresponding pad. They look like a 5 year old hand soldiers all of the parts in and then took a 5Lbs. weight and bent all of the componets around. Baring a bad modifaction job these units would normaly last 15-20 years of daily use with no failures. Cobra,RCI,Magnum,Stryker etc.... can not match this type of durability even with SMD. You get what you pay for when it comes to where your product is assembled. Japan,Korea, and Phillipines all made great CB radio's. Thailand was ok and China is the worst you can get in terms of quality control and atention to detail and durability!

I been lookin at the General Sherman...They claim to be the same as a 148. I wonder if this is true? I've heard the newer 148's are ..just wonderin if these are the same or better?

Hootyal, I have a Generel Sherman and I like it! DK is set to 2w swingin to 20w on am an 2w swingin to 22w SSB. I hvae made many contacts an everyone has given me excellent reports! The mod limiter is NOT clipped an the clarifier is not opened. The only problem I see with this radio is the pll chip. It cannot be modded for extra channels unles u replace the pll chip. From what I gathered the pll chip is of the newer version RCI-8719, but can be replaced with the older version that can be modded for extra channels. Other than that, you need to run a power mic on it otherwise the audio is low with the stock mic. Everyone I have talked to on SSB said the radio is super loud an super clean! And yes i do run a KLV 350 with it as I have it set up as a base. For the price it is a nice little radio in my honest opinion

missin my GRANT XL in my mobile, dumpin the rci 2950dx and goin back to my GRANT XL the GRANT XL has soooooooooo much of a better receiver very very quiet and pulls in those distant stations like no other. cotton pickin 2950 and all that white noise has to go. going to put a freq counter on the GRANT XL to go along with the extra switches, and as far as the power well we all know what to do about that if we want. the GRANT XL i think is in the top five mobiles ever where ever it was made.

Grumpy, I have a Grant XL, and it is the BEST CB radio that I have ever had. It is easy to operate, does not drift on SSB, loud and clear. It is peaked and tuned to 5 or 6 watts on AM. No linear amps are used. But it hears so much better than any CB I have ever used. It is just a great radio. And I even have one still brand new in the box, locked up in the safe! Just in case. :-)
