I RECENTLY AQUIRED THIS SKIPPER 300 FOR A GREAT PRICE (FREE),HAS THE CHROME TOP AND ALL! VERY GOOD SHAPE. HAS THE 8950 TUBES IN IT,1 DRIVING 3. MY QUESTION IS HOW MANY WATTS IS IT SUPPOSED TO DO AND SHOULD I KEEP MY DEAD KEY @ 2 WATTS SWINGING 20? MY 696F SSB PUSHES IT TO 250-300 BUT I'VE HEARD PEOPLE SAY THEY CAN GET 5-600 OUT OF THE SAME AMP...AM I DOING SOMETHING WRONG? |

OKAY, NO REPLIES YET... JUST CHANGED THE TUBES IN THIS BOX..WITH MY TR 696F SSB I NOW GET 100W DEAD KEY AND SWING TO 500W. I'M ASSUMING THIS IS ABOUT WHAT THIS BOX WILL DO! REAL GOOD REPORTS ON THE OTHER END TOO! |

Gator44, 500 watts peak? I'll guess that your just using a regular meter, not a Bird. If your meter is showing 100 deadkey and 500 swing, amp heat is normal, maybe use a fan, and you audio clarity is acceptable....I say it is just fine!! If your happy then have fun! Distortion is the enemy! For the best performance possible in the AM mode you want a 100% modulated signal which is a PEP of 4 times the carrier. The result is the most cleanest most loudest audio of all the land and minimal splatter. Your close at 5 to 1. Driving your Skipper at 2 watts DK and 20 watts PEP should be ok but you may not need that much swing. Some amps need very little input to get the job done. Catch ya on a sky wave! 73 Kenny cef491(27.115lsb) 2sf491(27.555usb) Indiana

Hotwire, thanks for the imput! Yes 500w peak..This joker is smoking after i changed those worn out 8950 tubes in it!! It runs cool too,no excessive heat. I heard that alot of swing was good though as long as you were'nt overmodulated?? Maybe i was told wrong. But good reports from everyone, clear crisp audio and very loud...guess i should'nt worry about anything and nail that thing down. |

Sonny, are all your tubes new?? Don't know about that amp...but with new 8950's in it, i would suspect you'd get even more out of it for sure. Just saying what this one was doing...right! |

gator all new tubes plus I own the manual for it and also have 3 extra sets for replacement. Thats why I said something it's rated as a 550 but most amps solid state or other wise will do about a 3rd of the said out put. Be careful you might be over driving it. |

Sonny, I don't think i'm over driving it with what i have pushing it..TR 696f SSB DK 2 watts and swinging to 17 set by copper when i bought it new! It runs very cool. Don't see where 17 watts would over drive it, do you? Like i said before, i was just stating what this box was doing on my meter(no it's not a bird)it's a libra 712 and that's what i have to go by. I understand that all meters are different and will give different readings. I did'nt make this post for a contest to see who's was running more, just stating what mine was doing with my equipment before and after new tubes. I did'nt know what this box was supposed to do in the first place and was trying to get info on it because i did'nt have a manual on it. Thanks for your imput though..... |

Gator Sounds like it's doing a good job for you, I'm using Mfj peak reading meter so no bird here. I'm not a Tech by no means but after having mine referbished the tech told me 8950's are rated around 80 watts each hope you can find a manual. |
