in my opinion the Uniden made is the best Washington. great audio a PLL that you can frequency out like crazy and a excellent radio on SSB. infact add a D104 with a 10A head and some think is compairable to a Kenwood on SSB. wattage wise i dead key mine at 3 watts and it swings around 25 watts. on Am i use either a turner super sidekick or D104 with great loud crystal clear audio. yup i don't think you'll would go wrong with the Uniden Washington. |

The older President line of radios with the uPD-858 PLL were very good and were made by Uniden. The older President sideband radios had many modification that could be done. Also the early Cobra line of radios, as well as many other brand names were of Uniden manufacture. Carl CEF-357 CVC-9 HAM-28 Flatlands of Oklahoma

Hard to beat the Uniden Washingtons. I have two, one is modified and I have had it since they were first for sale. The other my wife found at a small radio shop in lower Delaware, still new in the box and gave it to me for my birthday last summer. Cool or what! These radios are great SSB preformers and hear well too. EZ freq. expansion if that's what you want to do. I like others on this board when running SSB have been asked what kind of 10 meter rig I was using!!! And for the money they sold for new, what more could ya want?!! Just my 10 cents! Hope you are all are well out there, we have six inces of solid ice here in NE Maryland and it won't go away cause it's so cold. :-(((( |

The Uniden Washington is just a Grant XL/Cobra 148 GTL board in a big case with a cheap power supply. So you can get a Grant XL or Cobra 148 GTL and a cheap switching power supply and get the same performance. usually though for some odd reason the base stations can be had cheaper on Ebay then the Grant XL or Cobra 148 GTL made during the same time period. A lot of President models where made by Uniden off and on over the years just like a lot of Cobra and Realistic models where made by Uniden off and on over the years! I think the president radio tended to use higher quality parts in some key area's then similar radio's made by Uniden just like the President Lincoln tended to use higher quality parts then the original RCI-2950 in key area's.This is also why they where usually more expensive as well. I suspect those radio's made by Uniden for other companies including Prescient where made specifically to hit a target price point that they could not do on their own it goes to economy of scale! The weak link in the Washintons was always their power supply once you started peaking the radio you would run out of head room and the power supply would often fail. No radio is perfect every company compromises their design to be able to keep the price with in reason! I do not think it will matter much really just try to get a clean unit that has not been butchered. If anyone is going to butcher a radio of mine I prefer it be me. I do not trust very many peoples handy work when it comes to radio's. When I see a radio with switch's for extra's on say a PLL 002 I think it is radio I will not even bid on it. Likely that same radio has had it's ALC limiter defeated and any number of other modifications done by someone with no scope, no signal generator etc...... So try to find good working copies that have not been modified!!! Unless money is the driving factor as in you can steal one off ebay......I think you are better off getting something like an RCI-2950 or Magnum 257 and a 32watt switching power supply. |

Since very old threads keep being brought up again... I'd like to point out that switching type power supplies make their own RF noise. No big deal? When it reduces the sensitivity of your receiver, it's a big deal. Stick with linear (brute force) supplies until switching supplies can be built without RF hash. Some have begun making switching power supplies that specifically avoid popular ham bands for their noise output. Still not a good solution. Your radio 'Mythbuster' since 1998
