Have the problems with the Cobra 200GTL DX been corrected? Is this radio safe to buy and going to be reliable? |

Screamin deamin: I was kind of wondering the same thing Jimb654 was. If you just sent your 200s in for warranty work, you must have just purchased them in the last few months? Would it be fair to assume that there are still issues with these radios?......... I owned one of the originals in 2005 and traded it for an S9. Shame though. It has potential |

That's what happened Dale. I had the Cobra 200 for two days, back in Sept. 05. The SSB audio was so horrible the dealer let me trade up to an S9 for a few $$. The S9 is great. The Cobra still appeals to me though. It appears like it all depends on who tunes it for you. |

Check the messages I have entered in the cobra 200 gtl dx topic in this product review section. You will read that my 200 has been back in for warranty repair 4 times now. So here is something interesting since my last post back in Nov. 2006. My 200 has been woking really well since the last repair and here is why. The cobra warranty repair tech in TN has finally figured out the key to longevity with these radios. Turning back the output power to 70 watts max pep on sideband on high power as well as 20 watts max on AM is the key. Setting them to factory spec 100 watts on ssb and 30 watts on AM is going to lead to failure, trust me on this as the last three times before it went in it did not last long before it fried another set of finals. Now before people start suggesting it's my swr or something let me assure it's not. I have only used this radio as a base station connected to my Maco V5/8 on a 30 foot tower using 100Ft of Beldin 9913 coax. My swr is 1.2 to one on the only frequency I operate on. I use an astron RS-35M for a power supply. The power outputs I metioned were measured using a Bird wattmeter with a bird 2000 watt dummy load attached so thats a pretty accurate reading. I totaly agree with Bert that it depends if you have somebody who knows how to tune it correctly. That said, had the Magnum S9-80 been out back in 2005 I would have gone for that instead. I forgot to mention that turning the power back has made it sound a whole lot better on sideband as well. Switching to a Turner super sidekick mic also made a huge difference. Good luck on your decision. |

Was that the latest released model with talk back ?. I had one of the 2nd released models with the 2sc-2290's in it and 4 times it went in for repair of the rd16hhfi mosfet driver and also for a blown tx reg. Cobra did replace my unit only after the forth time in repair and many phone calls to then. New unit works ok but I have't use it much i'm thinking of getting rid of it while it's still working good. hehe. 73's |

Saw on an internet site the 200 was discontinued, "due to parts supply" or something like that. Anyone else hear this? |
