Ok I bought a 2 meter radio, its an Icom V8000 that does 75 watts from 136MHZ-174MHZ. I dont have a Ham licence yet but I plan on using it to monitor police, aircraft,etc..

Does anyone know if these are good radios, I paid $150.00 for it

oh yeah, you are going to have fun with that.

learn how to use the earch function if it has one.
also, you can find lots of freqs. for your local area online. look at the scanner sites.

hopefully the police in your area havent moved on to 800 mhz.
lots still havent. i live in las vegas, and our cops still use 155-159mhz for most day to day traffic.

have fun,
matt
anyone wanting a "clean signal", just look to the left and build one of these!!!

Be sure to hide the mic so some kid doesn't key up over some repeater. The offsets are automatic so it's ready to go once you tune in a a local repeater (most radios are now).

As a new VE (volunteer examiner for ham radio licenses) I encourage you to get your technician license so you can use the radio in the 144 to 148mhz (2 meter band). You can study the question on the internet or buy a book (best bet) at Radio Shack. The tests are supposed to get more difficult starting in June.

That particular radio is a little more difficult to program than others, per what I'm hearing from other hams. However, it is one of the more powerful sets. It is a very good radio.

Hopefully, this will stem your interest to get your ham ticket.

I have the V8000, it's a great radio. However the PTT button on the mike want bad after a year. From what I here it's a common problem.
