1.5 is ok if that's the highest, if it's higher you need to try to bring it down...yes, the cheap meter may be wrong, but if you can tune the antenna(check all connections, mounts, and coax first) down to 1.2 or lower with that meter then any other meter will probably read dead flat....also, make sure you test your swr with the mic gain all the way down, and use the stock mic Sean CEF867 CVC81 "Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you're up to!!"

Pen i did what you said channel 6 11 meters 1.2 channel 20 1.3 channel 35 1.4 or 1.5. it seems all in all is good i was told not to test on ssb becuase that doesnt do any good so i just am tested and those were the results i got the antenna grounded but its like four feet off the grand becuase i got it mounted to my deck until i get the straps for the chimney mount. The radio works great i made a few dx contacts on ssb to people in indiana and kentucky.am im shooting about 25 miles which isnt bad until i get the antenna on the roof. thanks for the advice. |

Yup its the 30 watt version maybe becuase i have it mounted to wood i always noticed that when i mount to wood the swr seems good.I had issues when i first got my antenna when i mounted to a metal pole the swr always seemed high i dont know if the metal poles interfere or whatever but mounting to wood seems best. My house is like 15 feet up on a small hill over looking the watter i got mountains in front of me etc but it works good.Im gonna have my dads radio guy mount my antenna higher out my window next month. The rings on my imax 99 are about 40% below the top of the adjuster and it just seems great. As for the rf gain down i didnt do that but i did do the test with mic gain down.I dont like to keep the meter installed permanetly becuase i like having my antenna run directly thru the radio. |

captain radio. After peak and tune i really see about 12 watts am and about 35 to 40 watts ssb. no complaints from any neighbors yet so everything seems good.Skip was crappy last night becuase we had a storm over here and the skip didnt get in until about 8pm and it died within the hour but i made about 4 contacts out of state. my am talk to locals max is about 25 miles and i talked to manchester nh which is about 25 to 30 miles from me and the recieve was kinda weak and i was giving the guy about 4 pounds on the meter. While he was giving me about a 2.Crystal clear with about 7 pounds sent to my buddys connex he is about 18 miles away.He was running 250 watts so of course he was pinning me.For about 12 watts pep am that aint bad.especially with my antenna mounted four feet off the ground i gotta get a roger beep installed in this radio and im going to berubes in bow nh to get it done single beep forty bucks with install. it reminds me of my 2510 just lacks that beep i need for ssb. |

NEWOPERATOR Curious Where do you set your your mic control for am and ssb?? I set my mic control for am at 2 oclock and ssb at 11 oclock, had some great audio reports from working dx yesterday.. I did open the mic up and turned the pot about a 1/4 of a turn to the right made a difference. 73 revpo/doctor/cef795 73 REVPO/DOCTOR/CEF 795 Wavin a hand from the cornfields of INDIANA

Got my New 257 the other day and so far I love it, Have no actual complaints so far about it and everyone I have talked to said its loud with no distortion with the mic gain at 1 O'clock. Also have been making plenty of 30-50 mile contacts with it on SSB and 20-30 mile contacts on AM. Sadly enough no DX contacts with it yet though! The only thing I think I would change about the radio is it should have come with a bigger mic but I am already getting used to that little one it comes with. Oh and a Dimmer would have been nice too that blue is awefully bright at night. And the best part of it is I ordered it the day before the price went up on it!!! Outkast CEF 650 |

I recently read on here in a different post, that the mic for the 357 is bigger and is wired the same as the 257. It supposedly is the same mic, just in a larger case. I think I'm going to try it, as I also find the mic a little small. I am also considering going ahead and ordering the DM-452, just to give it a try. As for the radio it self, after learning how to operate it correctly, (thanks again Lon), I really like it! It is currently in my radio room next to the S9 and above the Cobra 2000, but will soon find itself in the Jeep CJ-7. |

Capt205, The Factory Stock Magnum 257 microphone is the EXACT same microphone that was used on the Magnum 357 radio which has been discontined for several years now. There is No difference in size. Lon ~ Tech808 ~ N9CEF CEF#808 ~ CEF HAM#33 ~ CVC#002 Tech808@copperelectronics.com

I enjoy my MAGNUM 257, I have it peaked/tuned around 38 watts it's not the 50 watt model but I rack up 18- 20 contacts a day on ssb when skip is in, it punches a signal out and the audio is great. 73 revpo/doctor/CEF795/795 73 REVPO/DOCTOR/CEF 795 Wavin a hand from the cornfields of INDIANA

I tried 2 different mics on my 257 I besides the stock mic and the stock mic had the best sound the best from the reports I got. It does take a bit to get use to the size of it. I haven't used another mic but the stock one it does the best job for me. |
