When I unkey my radio using a KL-203 the radio switches back from transmit to receice (completely unkeys) but the receive does not seem to come back completely as if the radio has lost most of its receive sensitivity.I can click the mic button and the receive will come back fully.
I drive the KL-203 with a 2 watt deadkey and 15 watt swing.SWR`s check OK.
The problem is in the amp as I have tried it with other radios and it does the same thing.
When I switch out the KL-203 for another amp the problem is gone.
The problem seems to be in the KL-203.
Any ideas out there on this? Relay bad?

It could be a sticky relay or maybe some extra RF getting into the switching transistor circuit causing it to stay keyed. My amp does the same thing sometimes but not enough of a problem to fix it yet.

Kabar, Make sure it's not anything to do with the antenna! I ruined one of my Texas Star DX500's due to a bad Wilson roof mount that was brand new! I was having the same issues as you're describing.
The mount was shorted inside. After testing it with the multimeter I discovered it. SWR checked ok at first. It was just barely allowing the antenna to be connected and once I realized what was going on it was to late. Running at full power is how I noticed the problem. Now the amp is on its way to be serviced.
From now on I use only lug connected style mounts! Seems to me that the more parts an antenna has the more things can go wrong.

Kabar,

Make sure the amp is matched to the radio - if no one in your area can do that, change the length of the jumper going from your radio to the amp.
