I have a question for those who may have ran these type of amps before i have an xforce x80 with 2(2sc2290's) and an xforce 600hd with 6 (2SC2879's)in it.the biggest alternator i can find is a 220amp this is for a full size dodge truck 4x4.i was wondering if this alternator would be big enough to get the job done and not starve the truck of enough amps.i would be adding a extra battery or two also.

I am running 2x2290's into 8x2879's with my 7.3 Powerstroke. I have 2 new 1100cca batteries and a 200amp alternator, and everything runs just fine.

I did use 2.0 battery cable for the + and - to the big amp with a 150a circut breaker, and a seperate 4ga to the small one with a 50a inline fuse, soon to be a circut breaker also.

as capt205 says, bigwheel, you'll have no problem running that setup with a 220 amp alternator. make sure all cables are of sufficient size, or bigger-charge wire from alt to battery/underhood fuse box, connecting batteries, ground, amps, etc. i've had a bit of experience with newer dodge trucks & suv's, they'll handle RF, just make sure your antenna & coax are up to the task....i run a triple mag mount with no trouble. the antenna & coax were the original sore spots.

Yeah i'll be running a heavy gauge cable also.never ran an amp that big in the truck before and i didn't know if it would be enough amps or not. i'm going to try an go with bigger cca batteries also.

They said they had a upgrade kit for the power wire from the alternator to the battery as far as grounding i already have some of it done and going to do more. i'm going to get some better coax and jumpers.my antenna is a predator 10k the swr's is almost flat on it i have it grounded really well it sticks out like a sore thumb on a truck that has 7 inches of lift and 35 inch tires on it i get some wierd looks from people passing by

I forgot to mention the bigger charge wire, I up-graded that also. Lots of grounds added.

I also have a big lift with 35" tires, on a crewcab longbed, and the antenna mounted on the roof, so I hear you on the funny looks and strange comments.

The Optima gel cell batterys are choice for keeping voltage up. They are the best! I use a red top myself and the performance increase was very noticable. Best of all they do not gas or give off fumes or leak. If used properly they last for years and I have never heard of one going bad. Good clean power perfect for hf audio!

Hey guy's Along with adding the larger pos. and neg. leads to the batteries from the alt., do you need to do the same to the starter? I know it wont hurt but is it nessesary? Also my batteries are two 875 CA and 700 CCA and I'm planning adding a 140 or 200 amp alt. for 500 to 1000 watts pep

all wires from batteries & alternators should be upgraded-
to ground
pigtails to ground
to alternator
to solenoid
to batteries
between batteries
direct runs from batteries to any accessories

better safe then sorry!

Thats kinda what i was thinking that optima was one of the better ones. i was going to go with a total of two batteries for the truck and hookup the bigger amp to the second battery and hook the smaller one to the primary battery.Pat,i hear ya on the better safe than sorry i got plenty of ground strap to ground everything as far as the welding cable think i might have found some 1/0 gauge to hookup everything with. i already got the bigger charge cable for the alternator. Thanks everybody for your input you've been very helpful.

Hey Guy's
I'm kinda confused on this stuff.
This is what I've got: I have two batteries that each are 875 cranking amps and 700 cold cranking amps and a 66 amp alternator on a 6.2L diesel. Do I need to change or add a alternator if I install a amplifier that draws 50 to 100 amps?

stepchild, are you SURE that the alternator on the 6.2L diesel is only putting out a 66 amp charge current? i would recheck & confirm that, especially if 2x700 cca batteries is 'factory'.

if that is correct, i wouldn't go any bigger then 4 x 2290 amp, which is probably going to tax the alternator BECAUSE of the 2 batteries. i'd look for either an manufacturer upgrade alternator near 100 amps or aftermarket of at least 100. then you'd be good for a 4 or 5 transistor texas star-type amp, with room to spare with 2 batteries.

you can draw more amps then the alternator charges, but it will be hard on the batteries & alternator, as well as any 'weak' cables. lights WILL dim, wipers will slow down, heater/AC will blow slowly. the alternator is at risk of voltage regulator failure-20 or more volts is NOT good for the vehicles electrical system, and possibly fire. do it right the first time, or limit your power.

Thank you Pat
That's what I needed to know. I called the chevrolet dealer and they checked the R.P.O. code and V.I.N. and sadly thats the factory alt. The batteries are not but I didn't put them on, I bought it with them on it. I plan on swapping them for optima's and going with #2 cables for bat, alt, ect. I can also get a factory 140 amp alt, for around 250 or a 200 amp for 450 "WOW" that may take some sweet talkin to the better half, lol Thanks again to you and everyone for clearing things up.

Shop around for those alternators online. You can get a stock replacement 200 amp alt for much less than 450 bucks. They use all exsisting hookups and come with a modified bracket for mounting. Been shopping around myself.
KEEP IT REAL!

do I use a Co-Fased jumper(213u)-based on that question, ask LOTS MORE before you burn something down!
i just don't like fatboy using 1446's, or anything going away from 2879's.....anyway....WHAT IS IT YOU ARE TRYING TO DO EXACTLY????? are you talking about a 35 watt mirage RADIO???? or a 35 watt mirage vhf or uhf AMPLIFIER???? if it is an AMPLIFIER, then most likely that mirage is NOT GOING TO WORK on cb. clarify what it is you are doing & then we'll see what we can tell you.....

Hello Pat...here is what's really going on,I'm told that when I key my mic. as long as I'm talking the radio sound's good great talker, but when I stop talking as on a dead key the swing in the receiver's end drop way down and I thought maybe if I added a small driver that might resolve the problem.

so i'm guessing mirage RADIO with LOW dead key & LOTS of swing.....with the mic gain OFF, adjust the RADIO DEAD KEY so the fatboy AMP dead keys around 125-150 watts. THEN, turn the mic gain UP til the AMP swings 500 or so & everything should be good. DON'T worry if the mic gain ends up far LOWER then usual setting it up this way. nobody will notice any 'loudness' difference that will make ANY DIFFERENCE, and you in fact may sound even BETTER to locals.

Hello again Pat...Ok...now back to the amp 35 watt marage used as a driver....would I use a co-phased coax(if it can work) to run the 2 amp's,and can they be ran at the same time or would that not be a good Idea. I got the amp so I might as well use it if I can.

the only 35 watt mirage amplifier i know of is for VHF or UHF and will NOT work on CB. post a picture of this amp, or are there any name/addess labels on it, or something to tell me if it is a CB amp or not.

NEXT, test the fatboy amp as i posted above to see what output you get....to see if you even NEED a driver. if you DO in fact need a driver, it would go INLINE with the amp & radio-

cobra 148 antenna jack >>>> rg8x coax jumper to >>>>> driver amp INPUT (or 'in' or 'xcvr') >>>>>> another rg8x coax jumper from driver amp OUTPUT ('out' or 'ant') to >>>> fatboy amp INPUT (or 'in' or 'xcvr') >>>>>> antenna goes fatboy amp OUTPUT (or 'out' or 'ant').

you DO NOT use a co-phased jumper!!! tha amps go INLINE, one after the other. and YES, they would be ON at the same time......but, you would 'match' them up as i posted earlier, to get the correct OUTPUT for the FATBOY by adjusting the driver amplifier & radio alternately.

i SERIOUSLY DOUBT the mirage 35 watt amp you have is for CB!!! i am more then certain it is a VHF or UHF amplifier and will NOT work.
