I have Uniden Washington base station with a modest linear amp. It was bleeding over onto my neighbors TV and computer speakers so I bought a TVI filter from Copper. I hooked it up and it bleeds onto my computer speakers and TV so it appears the TVI filter is doing nothing. Is it defective? Is there something else I can do? There were not instructions but I assume the filter goes between the linear and antenna. Thanks!

Tumbleweed,

Your TVI Filter should be connected Directly to your radio by a double male coax connector pictured below.

Answering the following questions will be a big help in solving your TVI problem.

#1 ~ How and where do you have your radio grounded to?

#2 ~ How and where do you have the Amp grounded to?

#3 ~ How and where do you have the TVI Filter grounded to?

#4 ~ How and where do you have your coax grounded to?

#5 ~ How and where do you have your Antenna grounded to?

#6 ~ How and where do you have your antenna, Antenna tower and mast pipe and/or your pushup pole grounded to?

I don't have anything grounded. Would that be the problem? The interference is only with the amp. There are some good ground connections outside that the electric company made on the water pipes. Should I use that for the antenna? What should I ground the radio, amp and filter to? Thanks!

If the TVI is only with the amp then I'd suspect a possible problem with the amp itself. Try grounding everything according to the methods that have previously been suggested by both Tech-808 and Tech 833.

Have a knowledgable technician check the amp (if you really must insist on running it).

Thanks. I have a good radio so I decided to pack away the linear for now. On side band I don't need it anyway. I think I'll still ground everything though. Thanks again!

Johhn, popping static in your reciever? Find out where it is getting in at. If through the antenna try to find the source of the noise and try to stop it.
In the past I have tried different things with static getting in through the power cord. One thing that works really well with a DC powered radio is to install an automotive condensor on the positive lead. Splice the pigtail of the condensor to the positive lead and then attach (ground) the condensor itself to the radio chassis. It works.

The other thing that works well, is to wind some slack power cable on a toroid core. Wind it so that the first half of the core is wound clockwise and the second half counter-clockwise.

Use this in conjunction with Hotwires suggestion and you should have the cleanest power line around.

Ferrite cores on wires going into neighbors tv and also on computer speakers. Make sure they are as close to the tv and speaker end as they can be.

Follow-up: Found out my coax had a bad ground at radio end. D'oh! :-(
