Well by mistake i pumped over 100 watts from my yeasu into my Station 550 on 80 Meters and had a Post Fourth of July celebration in my shack. Flames and Sparks poured from the top of this box.. I did manage to get replacement a D&A Phantom Triple Stage, which is doing just great. I do want to get this KLM repaired though. This has been a great amp for as long as i have had it for also and would like to use it again. If someone could point me in the right direction or even advise if it is worth fixing it.. Let me know, also the Power supply and preamp still work, just can not get any output with transmit on this unit.. Thanks for the help

Flames and sparks? You actually had a fire? I'm know expert but I do know that fire is pretty darn destructive. Sure was one exspensive mistake man. I would just buy a new amp, one that can handle a 100 watt drive!

a big flame shot out of the top of the box then a good show of sparks showed.. i did open up the box the next day and it does look okay, hmmmmmm. fire & sparks are usually associated with the power supply section, usually the main AC power transformer, which can also generate lots of nasty smelling smoke. big loud pops & showers of paper are the electrolytic caps, again, usually in the PS section. smoke from the amplifier portion is usually a sign of diodes or resistors. there's not really enough going on in there to do anything other then melt combiner windings together. resistor smoke has a different smell then transformer smoke. if it looks okay & still turns on, i'm not so sure about the flame & sparks.....no output though could be caused by the keying transistor, blown finals, burned coils......

Not seeing the amp and not knowing what all is wrong, and knowing how much these shops charge for parts and labor, and the shipping, you would probably be better off buying another KLV and use that one to practice on. If you could get the parts yourself from a decent parts house and you are able to repair it yourself then it might be worth it. There are a lot of variables in this equation so you will have to do what you have to do. Great help I am.
