My 15 year old neighbor told me the other day that he would like to get a CB. He would be using it as a base station since he doesn't drive yet. I thought about donating a Cobra base that I have lying around and seeing if I could find a back of the set antenna. I don't know if his parents would let him put up an external antenna. I know he won't be able to talk very far, but it's a start. Does anyone have any other ideas for a set up?

Any mobile with a decent recieve and a power supply would work. A back of set antenna is going to be a let down. A 102 inch whip on the chain link fence would be better!

A back of set is more than a let down. Hotwire is right. You could also use a dipole.

One of those new little Cobras and a 3a power supply (that blue Cobra19 that Lon raved about months ago sounds like a nice AM starter?)
and as Izzy said....if a vertical will offend the Mom and Dad...A dipole in a tree was one of my first homebuilt and talked well barefoot 15mi at 20ft inverted V. ( can you say NO TVI? :-))
