Thinking of getting a different box to talk am as well as ssb with my 2970dx. Looking at the DX500, DX1200 or DX1600? Radio can dk as low as 8 watts to about 50w max. Swings to around 160-180am and 150w ssb. I know the TS amps are on the pricey side however it seems these amps last forever. What kind of watts would I see and any recomendations from owners of these boxes.

well being your low power dk is only 8watts
the 500 is out cause youll blow it up with
a 8watt dk.so that leaves just the 1200 or 1600
id go all the way and get the 1600.another option is a comp style box.which seem to handle
more dk/swing.but if ya use ssb at all then ya want to make sure is has ssb delay.or class
ab amp.class c no good on ssb.ya can make the
ts 500 work but you,ll be limited to just ssb
use as thier,s no dk to worry about.then all
ya would do is adjust for around 50-65 watts pep
on the rf power knob

What kind of real world amps would this take? And using a second battery have any benefit if the alt is rated at 120?

If you wire up two batteries in parallel and it works just fine. Texas star makes a good clean amp. Thats a good radio you got though.
