DM-452 Squeaed. even after adjusting. Older full sized uniden mic low audio, RK-56 new low audio. Best mic was the small mic that came with it.Even tried a silver eagle. Where is the mod adjustment or gain. set it 4 or 4.5 watts out and grounded to frame Conected the Superstar DM-452 to the 2950dx works good at the base

Info I found-Cut one end of D-203 stand it up and put the stock mic back on, see what you think. If it's old chassis cut D-14.

Please don't mind if I chime in...

I have the exact same board pictured above, but apparently the latest model doesn't seem to have a # D203 (unless I've gone totally blind and senile). Seems like it changed yet again, perhaps to another number? I just bought one of these 510XL's a few days ago and I'm trying to open up the modulation. After extensive searching on google I've found nothing on the internet for the latest board it seems.

If someone could mark a red circle around the diode that is supposed to be D203 in the picture posted above and re-post it, it would be a great help.

The board may have been changed again. Do a tune and try what Dale used.

Update - Apparently the board did change again.

For the 2011 and up manufactured 510XL's the D203 diode is on the trace side of the board underneath a metal shield that is soldered onto the board. A little hassle to get to now, but with a little patience it can be done with some de-soldering.

Until I feel motivated to bring my soldering iron home from work, I'll just use a 575 M6 for my Ranger AR3300 that plugs up and works fine with the Uniden 510XL.

Some say the 510XL has audio that's strong like Tram. If it distorts you may want to add a 100ohm vr in series with diode and insulate it from board. The stock mic is still great once clip is done. Thanks for follow up.

Another update -

Well I couldn't resist. I de-soldered the anode end of D203 and bent it up. I left the wattage alone to keep a low drive with max modulation. Out of curiosity I left my 575-M6 on instead of the stock mike and hooked up this little booger to my old Wawasee meter that has a talk-back jack for headphones. I was expecting this thing to squeal like a pig, but oh boy this little thing sounds sweet with the old adjustable Astatic teardrop. Even sweeter yet with a little mosquito. Not as wicked as my old PI made 148 GTL, but for a 33 dollar rig that's suited fine for a Jeep in the bushes you can't go wrong.

So here are a few notes for the 2011 and newer 510XL's....

1) D203 is now located on the trace side of the board instead of the component side.

2) There is a metal shield soldered onto the board that covers this little diode. You need to de-solder this shield (4 legs) to get to the diode.

3) You are unable to "snip" the diode itself because the ends of it are soldered very close to the board. One end of it needs to be de-soldered and then lifted up slightly and gently. Make sure it doesn't touch the shield after you solder the shield back on.
-------
Well that's about it for the modulation on the 510XL. Removing one end of D203 from the circuit will definitely make it a bit louder than just turning up the pot.

- Roach

Keeping in mind that with no audio limiting, the carrier can be "pinched" and the output will splatter. That also enables people with intact radios to "talk through" your signal with your carrier pinched.

Have you ever noticed how some radios seem to block out most everything else on the channel while others, you can hear even weaker signals through them?

Best bet- Leave audio limiters in place. When aligning a transmitter, align so that carrier is not pinched on audio peaks.

833 is correct. that 575 is a awsome mic byitself.
im betting it alone would done fine. the 452 mic
is cheap and in my installs i seemd to always
have some issue. oh well get what ya pay for i guess

The new SMT....Removed D203 now it swings to about 22 watts, carrier at about 4.5. No problems, but i'm still using a stock mike. This was my first time with the new boards.
