What would anyone recommend for a good aftermarket power mic for the 158 EDX? Now the reason I ask is that with my voice (Deep and bassy) the audio seems very flat ,its loud but flat sounding.Does anyone have any comments on the D104M6,I have heard that they are a lot higher pitch than most mics?

I run the stock mic. I have well over 50 contacts with it. Not one person has ever asked for more audio, and some even asked if I was running a power mic. The stock mic works great in my humble opinion.

Well I am leaning toward the D104M6 not to be louder but to add a bit more highs on AM ,as I stated earlier my voice is deep and bassy and I need a mic that will add a bit more higher freq. response to brighten things up.I have heard a few M6's and they seem to have a sharper tone.On SSB it sounds much better, as a matter of fact last nite I was on 10 meters talking to some guys in PA. and one commented that it sounded like a big radio .I do run it in the mobile and I notice that with the cold weather the freq. display is off about 700 hertz till it warms up,but for the most part it seems to be working not to bad but could use an alignment which I will do at a later date.

I have been using my Astatic Road Devil mic with my 158 since I got the radio and have had excellent reports on all modes with it , like yourself with my voice the stock mic is a bit flat soundin but with Suzy's voice it sounds great.

Tnx for the info Jim,I was wondering if you have ever had a problem with the radio showing off freq. a bit in the cold weather? Mine is now in the car and I am seeing that it is showing a change of freq of about 700 hertz high ,when it warms up its ok.Sounds like a poor design with one of the trimmer caps that cannot handle the cold temps.They should have used trimmer caps that are designed for colder temps in mind.Its more of a pain than anything else but I can just shift the clarifier to get it centered

Here in Michigan all radio's kept in peoples car's during the winter time have drift until they warm up on SSB. The trick in Michigan is to put 1 or 2 wheat bulbs like what are used to light meter's not LED those do not get warm. You use hot glue and glue them to the metal case of the SSB crystal filter. You wire them to the radio's On/Off switch so that the second you turnt he radio on they come on. They will heat up the crystal filter faster and once at temp they do not vary at all so that is an easy cold weather fix. The colder it get's in your area the more you can use. If you wanted to you could wire them to a switch be it the PA/CB switch or one you install if you did not want them running year round. |
