My Cobra 2000gtl is making wierd noises on ssb when I key it up. Nice and clear, loud audio on AM. I'm being told that it is all noisey and makeing a whistle type noise and that I am not sounding good.

It puts out a carrier on SSB without saying anything, and this is with the stock mic as well as the Turner Plus3B.

Any ideas on where to start looking?

capt205,

in your PM you did not tell me that the radio was putting out a carrier on SSB.

this is a simple fix.
put an SWR meter between the radio and antenna, set it to CAL (calibrate), and turn the CAL knob all the way to the right. (maximum)

set the radio to either LSB, or USB, and turn the mic gain all the way down.

take the top covers off the radio and find VR4.
it is in the center of the board towards the front.
key the radio, and look at the SWR meter.
you will see that the needle moves to the right when you key up.
using a small screwdriver, adjust VR4 until the needle on the SWR meter drops all the way to the left. (no reading/ no needle movement on key up)

there you have it!
you have just "nulled" your SSB carrier.

you should be all set now!
BTW, whoever aligned your radio should have known about this, so i would recommend that you not let that person inside your radio again.
matt
anyone wanting a "clean signal", just look to the left and build one of these!!!
