need someone to tell me how to adjust my tr 696f ssb radio to rid some of my white noise and if there's any other adjustments that need to be made in the process. i can hook up to my other base set-up and the same thing, where there's none on my 2980!! is there an adjustment i can make? thanks |

I have had success with adjusting L8. What I do is just listen to people I normally listen to while turning L8. I have found it possible to take out a lot of this "hiss" and still have good ears. Of course radios with this particular board have more hiss anyway. I have tr966 that I did this too, galaxy mp45, 2517 and several others utilize the same basic pcb.. |

BEFORE you play with L8 what is it?
Seems to me its the input to the RF preamp stage.
You need to hook a signal generator to the antenna connector and tune that coil back to MAX !
DETUNNING coils is not the way to fix it. If the radio does not have the noise when no antenna is connected then its comming in from the antenna and at 27 mhz thats a common problem.
A good CB set on AM should be able to read the generator down to about .5UV ( -112DBM ) and if it does its working just fine.
Some older radios use a 2sc1674 transistor as a rf stage and replacing it with a 2sc2229 lowers this noise floor to about .3UV but EXTERNAL ( with antenna connected ) noise will seem sightly higher.

I do not actually know what it is called. I was told this info from a tech at galaxy radios

Well...
i have to disagree with him detunning a radio is not a way to fix a problem.
Here is a simple test tune it back to MAX noise THEN ...
REMOVE the antenna if it drops so that the meter is showing below S2 the set is working just fine.
Just my opinion but I've been licensed and working in radio for a long time he does not make sence ......
