This is a question for the radio Guru's that carry alot more knowledge than I. I drive a T800 Kenworth dumptruck. What mobile radios in your best opinion would you reccomend for this application?

AM only or with SSB?
40 channels sufficient, or do you want 'extras'?
4 watts enough, do you plan on using an amplifier, or do you want a radio with some extra 'power'?
no ham license i assume?

am 40 ch.only=uniden pc68/78
am/ssb 40ch.uniden grant or texas ranger
export=magnum s9 or 2950dx these seem the simplest to operate while driving.if ya choose
1 of the last 2 be sure its mounted secure
or cold solder joints may becomne a problem

Looking for that "Loud n Proud" sound of the big boy's. without running a amp. AM or AM\SSB even the extra channels would be fine, not that I'd ever use them, not being a licensed Ham. Just mainly looking for the most bang for my buck under 300.00 as not to pull the other halfs purse strings to hard.......

'legal' CB, from copper, would be either the texas ranger 966 or 696fd1. have owned both the original & current 696fd1 & it's a fairly decent performer, xmit & receive. know of a couple 966's & they seem to get the job done as well. bang for the buck export radio would have to be the superstar 158edx from copper. get 1 before they're all gone! not much more in cost then one of the 'legal' ones, more freqs & decent AM & SSB power. an 'upgrade' could be the rci6900ftb150 or 69ffc2, plenty of freqs & lots of power, but, prices start getting steep! i like the 6900, but have never seen the new 69ffc2, but hear it's a real nice radio. an S9-80 would be another real good, easy to operate radio with good rcv & plenty of talkpower.....
based on your last sentence, i'd say 158edx would be the best choice!

well before ya get too far im curious as to
what type of antenna, coax, mount youll be using
thats a good portation of the battle there.
and most of those [big boys] run radios that
splsatter 10 channels.best bang for your dollar
IS a magnum 257 just look at the ad it has
the extra channel ssb and 50 watts.all that
for around 200.00.its all in what you want
but selections are still the same

sounds good.i personally like wilsons longer shaft and shorter whip.wilson 2000sw it gets
that coil above the cab alot better.im
gonna assume you checked your swrs and thier
1.5 or less.if ya gonna run power i highly
reccomend checking into lmr-240 coax.its
the size of mini 8x but much b etter quality
and double shielded.as far as radio ya need to
figure out what ya reaal want/need in your
radio.imho if ya use ssb at all i would probaly
consider buying a ssb unit.however if this is
just gonna be for a work truck then i might
consider just a 40ch.unless ya have no base
unit and all the cb time ya gonna have is in
the mobile id definately get like a magnum 257
but then this is just me.you gotta do what works
for you

I have the Texas Ranger TR 966. Have used it in my car and currently using it as my base. Had a friend put the extra channels in for me as it comes 40 channels only. (AM-SSB.)
Is it the best choice? Probably not, but, wanted to let you know it has worked well for me. If I was in your position, i'd purchase a rugged radio with alittle extra power than 4 watts and one with extras. Best of luck with whatever you purchase.

I use an old Uniden AX 144 in the jalopy. Rough as guts, meter don't work, screen printing just about gone off the face, chrome peeling, unmodifiable without MAJOR surgery but does the job without fail. I've had it in about 4 or 5 of my cars over the years and still won't die. Still a little bit on the large size but not as big as a Grant. I think it still works on AM but i don't use anything but SSB. I still can't believe it still works after all the abuse it has had, check one out....they are bloody good radio's.

You can get a Texas Ranger 696FD1 and an Astatic Road Devil mic for under 200 and sound big as $h!t, no splatter, and all perfectly legal.. All while running your wilson.. I swear by Wilson Antennas, nothing better for your application.

Best bang for the buck...

I recommend the Uniden PC-78-XL at just under $100 it is AM only.

OR the Galaxy DX 949 at about $130, it is AM and SSB.

Either of these radios will produce that BIG RADIO sound you are looking for. But you will have to have a radio tech work their majic on them first.
