Oh man.... My baby, my poor baby.

I have a Uniden Washington base station that I have used daily since I bought it used in 1997.

I noticed about 2 weeks ago that I was getting some flickering of the meter light and an occasional click or pop comming from the speaker while listing.

Then last saturday, it was on, and it just turned off. I thought it had to be related to the power supply, so I check the fuse. It was blown. I replaced it, and it blew again right away. so I dragged in a battery, and swithched the power over to DC. same problem the in line fuse blew.

What do you all think? I'm handy with a soldering iron, and can identify parts ok, but this is over my head. Any help would be great.
The local (40 miles away) cb shop says they can't get parts for it anymore, and don't want to work on it.

Help, I love this rig, and hate to trash it.!

If it is doing it on both ac and dc I'd suspect the finals.

Most CBs used to have (still do I think) the finals wired so that they had power applied to them whenever power was connected to the radio, thus is a final was shorted it would instantly blow the fuse.

I don't know the circuit for the Washington, but they may have run the dc power thru the rectifier used when running on ac, and a problem here may also cause it to blow the fuse.

Turn the radio off, plug in a fuse and see if it blows without turning the radio on. If it does it is almost certainly the finals.

Thanks for the info. I gave it a shot on both AC and DC. and the fuses dont blow unless the radio is turned on.

I also cut the common wires from the AC power supply to isolate it from the board, and it still blows fuses on DC.

I guess that would narrow it down to a problem on the main board, but like I said, before it quit, for about 2 weeks it was showing signs of power fluctuations. the meter lights would flutter and there was a pop or crackle in the speaker.

Maybe it was just the early signs of a short, but I have inspected the board for burned spots or popped caps, and I don't see anything that sticks out.

I hope we can keep trying, I love this radio, and over the years have made many DX contacts with it.
