i bought a tram 201a knowing it had a hum in it, took it to local shop for repair, The more he got into it the worse it got. he is telling me most of the capacitors are old and dry and that is what is causing hum, I am told it will cost a whole bunch of money to restore it to new shape. Are they worth it and am I being told the truth. Just wondering if anybody else has been down this road. Thanks

Trams are pretty desirable radios, but the issues you have are very common for a 30 year old radio.
The hum is often due to bad filter caps, but there are many components that may need to be replaced, and that can cost a big chunk o' change.
I have heard typical costs of nearly $300 to restore a Tram, so if you aren't interested in putting that kind of money into it, sell it fir a reasonable price and let someone else restore it, but don't throw it out. It has value to someone.

You can rebuild it yourself. Parts such as caps and resistors r available from mouser. I have 2 I am restoring. One for myself and one for a friend. I plan on putting 2 12 volt fans on the back to keep them cool. It is a very good idea as one tube is very close to the pcb. tony/n5jva

If it receives and xmits ok then replacing the electrolytics is all u need to do. However at some point all of the 1 - 3 watt resistors will need replacing. tony/n5jva/cef 259
