Hello all. I am looking for recommondations on which mobile radio to buy. Here are my needs...am/ssb, backlight panel, good sounding modulation, echo on-off,power=100watts not really needing the extra freq coverage. I've had Galaxy,Magnum,Connex,Ranger, each has its own quirks. I will wait to read your comments before buying, Thank you!

To bad the Connex 4800 is not available anymore. I been running one mobile for a while now and I bet 9 out of 10 CEF members would agree that the Hotwire mobile sounds good and does a decent job. With a little help from T.S. of course and lots of installation help from many members in giving me the understading of what is going on around me. If you can find one I would check it out!
Any RCI/Ranger product would be tops in performance and reliability.
I have been exceptionally pleased with the SSB performance of my Magnum S-9. No other receiver I have listened to works like this one. The clarity I can get out of it with SSB is amazing. Cleaning up very strong processed SSB signals with just the RF gain was the first thing I noticed. Not a real ham rig but pretty darn close performance wise in my opinion.
Not sure about the echo circuits of these 2 radios. One switch I personally wish would have been used for something I could really needed. They both work and do what they are intended to do.
The freq coverage of the S-9 is pretty good depending on what you want you can change it around to your preference.
The channel knob on the S-9 did take some getting used to but other than that it seems to be pretty solid.
Backlight panels pretty much narrows your choices down to the Galaxys which I cannot honestly comment on. There are a handful of illuminated digital displays out there.

Hope I was helpful in your decision making as I enjoy braggin about my radios!
KEEP IT REAL!

You say you have a Magnum, but never said what model you have?
A Magnum 257 has:
am/ssb and even fm.
Backlight panel.
Good sounding modulation and receiver on both TX and RX.
What it don't have but can have:
Echo on-off (an echo mic will take place of that)
Power=100watts, not 100 watts but there is a 50 watt model.(50 watts should do anyone well)
(not really needing the extra freq coverage)
not really needing it, ok but it can be mod for it.
all this for around $200.00 (give or take a little)
