I have this amp and noticed when my SS-158edx is hooked up my rf meter swings backwards when modulating.
My Dosy and RS watt meters show forward swing.
The backwards swing does not occur using my old galaxy 44v or my stryker 44hp.
I know the 158 has a higher dead key but relatively the same PEP wattage as the others.
Is the built in rf meter significant ? |

no. it is 'relative'-when things are 'good', note what the meter does. if the meter 'changes', something has changed, maybe good, maybe bad, you'll need to check it out.
to satisfy my own curiousity though, i would play with the dead key AND mic gain on the 158, just to see if i could persuade the TS meter to swing forward. you may find you have too much swing & lowering it gets the TS meter to swing forward, with little if any difference in output on the external meter. |

The 158 does not have an external adjustment to vary the dead key. Is there an internal pot ?
The modulation level doesn't effect the backwards
swing ( that I can tell). |

i'd wire variable rf power into the echo, or at least squelch, but that's just me. not sure what it is, but yes there is an internal adjustment for rf power on AM & on SSB. what kind of wattage are you seeing on the dosy? AM dead key? AM swing? SSB swing? the mic gain has to lower the 'swing' level, but if it still swings backwards, i'd check what the dead key is now & try lowering it, it may be a bit high for what the amp requires. if the dosy is showing more then 150 watts dead key on AM, you most likely are overdriving it-closer to 125 would be better, swing should be around 500 on AM, maybe a bit less on SSB. |

Try raising or lowering the dead key on the radio.I had that happen to me when i tried a 1/4 watt dead key.I raised it to 1 watt and it swinged foward. |

My dead key is too high , 10 watts swinging to mid 40s. I will poke around and try to find how to adjust the dead key. ( no 220-330 micro-farad/150 ohm resistor deal on this, is it ? ) |
