HELLO ALL...A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN THIS RADIO FIRST CAME OUT I WAS ALL READY TO BUY ONE. BUT AS TIME PASSED,I LEARNED THAT MANY OF THE RADIOS HAD THEIR PROBLEMS. NOW I SEE THAT THE LAST SET OF RADIOS THAT COBRA HAS RELEASED "3RD GENERATION" SEAMS TO HAVE ALL THE PROBLEMS CORRECTED. MY QUESTIOS ARE: IS THE LAST BATCH OF RADIOS,INDEED PROBLEM FREE?? HOW CAN YOU TELL IF A RADIO IS ONE OF THE 1ST,2ND OR 3RD ONES THAT HAVE BEEN RELEASED?? THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP

I wouldn't say the new Cobras are problem free. It's still a crap shoot. Have the 11 meter conversion done and a tune and alignment to factory specs and you should be good. Don't try to squeeze every watt out of them, that's how most fail. As far as the serial number goes, I'm sure a Google search will help, or someone here who knows will chime in.

I agree with Train man. It is a big crapp shoot and you will probably crapp out on the first roll.
I feel that this radio has put the last nail in the coffin for Cobra dependabilty.
I know of not one owner who never had an issue with this radio.
Even the ones that were factory tuned never tinkered with and never overheated were trouble.
I would not trust any generation. Period. Let Cobra make cheap cb's walkie talkies and rader detectors and leave ham radios to the companys who focus only on ham radios.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I have a 2nd generation 200gtldx and have never had a problem with it. I bought it new and had a local tech do the conversion/tune/alignment to it. According to him, the biggest problem with these radios was all the "golden screwdriver" wannabe techs that got into them and tried to squeeze every last watt out of them. The 1st generation did have heat issues that brought the mosfet finals to an early grave, but that was resolved when the 2nd generation came out with 2290 finals. There was also a problem with the audio chip in the 1st generation, but I think that was resolved also. One that has been properly tuned and aligned should be quite dependable. I've had more issues with Connex and RCI, but that's another story...
