My Dad hooked his Uniden President up backwards on his power supply. Don't how I guess he is getting old. LOL Anyway. I know on some radios there is a diode that usually blows to save the radio. Can anyone tell me if the President has one. Its an older radio. And if so what diode is it? Thanks |

The diode is usually located inside the back of the radio near where the power cord enters the chassis.If it is bad it will sometimes have a crack in it but not always, if the fuse is blown you should check the diode with a VOM but unhook one end from the board.This is why most ham rigs have a fuse in each lead to help prevent this , good insurance

Unfortunately it was not fused. It was one of the radios he inherited from my uncle. He got in a hurry I guess & wasn't watching closely. The problem of the power cords having red stripe on them got him. Don't know why they put red on the ground at all. But anyway I am going to open it today. Do you know what value diode that is so I can replace it? Thanks |

if it has on it could be a 1002 they were commonly used .... look for burned foil.

Ok I got it opened. The diode is not cracked or burned looking, but I am going to change it out. Again I need to know the value of the diode. Also there is a capacitor in the lead of the solder from the diode. Could that have blown also? I see know indication of burnt components. Just that awful burnt smell. Thanks |

The diode probably heated it self to destruction, even though it looks good you really need to test it out of circuit,just unsolder one end and do connectivity check.Usually about a 5 amp diode will work fine and always a good idea to fuse both lines.

Just let me check, DIODE-RECT, CONTROL PIV=200V, IO>.75A,schmatic shows a 1N4003, PIV =200 means it will take 200v peak inverse voltage,looks like it will only take about 1 amp reverse before it blows, very common and cheap.

Sorry should have said 5 amp fuse but 7 amp is still ok for the 2510.

Ok here is what I got now. I guess the magical wizard of Oz didn't let the thing get totally fried. It comes on & was working last night. But the speaker was acting all funky. Popping at first. Then it started working. Well I turned it off & turned it back on. Everything is working except the sound from the speaker. I put another speaker in line & still nothing. What circuit would make the speaker work? You can see the meter working so it is receiving, but just can't here anything. Any suggestions? |

Check the squelch control,maybe its dirty from sitting so long also check the volume control as well, give it a good cleaning with a quality spray as a matter of fact clean all the controls and try hooking up a speaker via the acc. plug on the back and check the mic connections.
